Software to convert .vob?

I'm not really sure exactly what a .vob file is, and why they are so large, but I do know that it doesn't make any sense that when I backed up my LOST DVDs to my computer for my HTPC, the 4 episodes on each DVD equated to more than 5 gigs per DVD. Because a DVD is only 4.7 gigs, and right now I'm ripping about 5 gigs per DVD, it seems there would be a way to compress these .vob files to a different format while still retaining the HD quality.

Is there any software that can do this? Thanks!

Wow that's an awesome site!! It really helped a lot, and I loved the section they have on explaining exactly what's on a DVD.

However, it didn't really give me quite the help I was after. It doesn't say much about what file type to use to maintain the HD quality with a minimal file size. Maybe it'd be best just to rip them as .ISOs and just mount them as needed?

Are you sure they aren't dual layer discs? Otherwise there would be now way to get 5GB off a single layer disc.
I use DVDFab Platinum to reduce larger DVD sizes to single layer size.
All of my DVD's are ripped into a 4.3GB folder size. Then you just have to click on the VIDEO_TS to play them.
