Software Problems

Hi all,

I work for a fairly large corporation and I do the deskside support. What I'm looking for is a tool that can diagnose a problem? Or track everything that is going on with the PC then I can find out what is causing the problems. The systems are on XP Pro, SP1, running on a P4 1.7 - 3.0. Basiclly these systems are running very slow and lock up. Any help diagnosing the issue would be greatly appreciated.

If the systems are running very slow, usually means spyware lurking in the computer, what with people downloading anything from anywhere. Try Spybot Search and Destroy to get rid of it.

I don't understand the problem.

You think there's spyware/viruses on these computers or just generally slow?

You can check for spyware via the post in the Software - Apps forum here at Anandtech (it's stickied on top).

If you mean just general stuff, you can start by doing the routine stuff such as defragmanting, checking disks for errors, etc.

One great tool within Windows that many people do not use is the Event Viewer. If you are having problems when specific applications are run, you can look through the Event Viewer and proceed from there. To get to it, go to the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

We need more specific info to be more helpful. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses,

I have checked task manager and event viewer and nothing looks out of the ordinary. Sorry for not having more info.

I'm in the process of reloading these machines with XP from NT. My emoployees I support are complaining about XP being alot slower than NT. It just seems any application takes allot longer to launch and to process than with NT. There are no errors in event viewer and nothing sucking up the CPU. When trying to defrag, it says you do not need to defrag.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
