Software install problems on XP Home

I am having troubles installing software on a co workers computer. It is running XP Home that was pre installed. He has the disc but I am not sure if it is a full version or what it is! Some software installs just fine, this appears to be true of software that has its own installer. If I try to install software that is dependent on the Windows Installer it gives the error that the Windows installer cannot be accessed due to a incorrect path? When I go to Control Panel> Administrative Tools>Services and Check properties of the Windows installers it shows a real whacky path, not the C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V that it should be.
I would like to enter the path C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V but it will not allow me to do so. I was logged in as a administrator but no way I could change it! Sure would appreciate some input on getting the path correct to msiexec.exe. Thank you................

Doing a search on "Windows Installer" and "Incorrect path," I get no hits. Can you post the exact error message please?

Also, you might want to try running sfc /scannow

Obviously the exact error would be nice to give you but I am not at that computer now. The bottom line however is to get rid of the weird executable path that the Windows Installer has now and I have to give it the correct path somehow C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V

Whats happening when I try to install software that requires the Windows Installer(msiexec.exe) it cannot find it due to the goofy path that somehow got set.

yup
i have seen this problem before. i am glad that this is not a random error that i alone only have seen. i tried to fix this problem. and i did fix the Installer service that runs on bootup. i had to track it down in the registry to fix it. but, it did not help. i still could not install applications even though i fixed the SERVICE problem. if anyone knows please post the solution?!

ACK!!! yazz, thats not info I want to hear!! hehe I tracked the msiexec.exe down in the registry and found the weird path that I assume is giving him the problems. Next time I am over at his place I will edit the registry to the correct path

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V and hope that resolves it.
