Software for learning how to drive, OTHER than racing games?

Locut0s

Lifer
Yeah I'm 27 and don't know how to drive 😀 But that's going to change. I've passed the written test before and gotten a temporary licence but never used it to learn to drive. It has since expired and I need to "write" the test again. Anyway I was wondering if there was any software out there that could help me learn to drive in a simulator before I take the wheel and ruin someone's clutch 🙂 I want to learn stick shift as that will allow the most versatility. And by software I don't mean a racing game , I'm looking for the most realistic simulation of day to day driving possible with realistic clutch, brake, accelerator handling for a normal car. Anything like this out there?

Thanks.

Grand Theft Auto 4

*and why the fuck won't ATOT let me type in all caps!?

Is that a joke about GTA4, does it really offer a realistic driving simulation? About Caps it's because vB as an anti CAPS filter on. You can get around it by just having a single lower case letter, BUT I DON'T RECOMMEND IT AS THIS IS REALLY REALLY ANNOYING!!

Heh back in highschool (10+ years ago) I was looking for something similar. I ended up finding some simulator that seemed pretty realistic. Damn I can't remember what it was called. Was all over the aol warez chatrooms...

Nothing beats a parent yelling at you that you're doing it wrong though.

Go rent a stick (I think they're really scarce), and find a very empty and large parking lot. Proceed with cautions.

How do you get the car to the parking lot? Ask a friend, or rent one that know how to drive a stick.

AND CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!

Hehe well I'm passed that age luckily. Actually come to think of it my mother would still yell at me if I ruined her transmission. I'm obviously still going to make a lot of mistakes starting out but software like this would help at least to get a better feel of the clutch, accelerator rhythm that I need.

There's no software outside perhaps a real driving simulator that can properly "teach you to drive."
The ONLY way is to get behind the wheel and practice, practice, practice.

Huh never thought of renting a car, not a bad idea thanks. And here I was just going to wreck my mothers transmission

Yeah there are a couple of parking lots around here that I have in mind.

I started off in the parking lot of my high school then later on streets with my mom as passenger going OMG! in french, and I could tell on my current progress by how red her hands were while she grasped the holy shit handles. When she did not even use the handles anymore, I knew I was doing good. I learned pretty well that way.

There are permanent nail indentations on the passenger side of that car now.

Patent pending?

Driving applications or games?

Are you joking; the only way you are going to learn is by driving a real car. Every driving game I've used is shit and not realistic.

In the UK, you can learn on the roads without having a license provided you have a provisional licence with someone next you who has a full licence (and they've had it over five years) and you are obviously insured on the car. Alternatively, you can do this without all the legislative repercussions by driving on privately owned land.

I'm assuming you can do the same in the US (with regard to privately-owned land).

Edit: My post (to me) seems dismissive of driving games / simulations: I'll give an explanation why I said what I did in my post.

You will not get a 'feel' for the car; how it handles, how it brakes (what your braking distances are) and how it accelerates; the games, although they perceive themselves as reaslistic are not the same as the actually thing.

Additionally, you will not learn about blind spots, indicators, windscreen wipers, full beam / dipped beam, etc. These are basic controls / charateristics of any car, which you don't usually have in a driving game / simulation.

Then added to this, you have general driving conditions: driving conditions (wind, rain, snow, night time, fog, mist, sleet), looking out for pedestrians, other cars, any other hazards on the road, traffic lights, sign posts, etc. All these need to be learned and anticipated whilst you are driving in the real world. You will gain this by experience on the road and it will become second nature to you as a good experienced driver.

I know I have edited my post several times; this is because I've thought of other aspects of driving, which I've then added to my post. Driving is not that simple if you want to be safe toward yourself and others. Believe, me I know a lot of shit drivers and I don't believe myself to be a good driver, because I have picked up bad habits over the years.

Why don't you learn how to drive an automatic vehicle first? Start off in a parking lot and go from there. Maybe ask a friend or parent to take you to the local mall after hours or something..?

Yeah I'm probably just going to go out and start practising. I'm actually in Canada not the US. Here we have VERY stick driving laws. We have a graduated licence system with 3 stages to go through before you get your official licence, which takes several years. The first level is really quite restrictive, you have to have someone with a full license with you at all times and no driving after dark etc etc...

Why does everybody drive so badly their first time? I drove for the first time at my HS parking lot about a year and a half ago, and my mom was really impressed.

..video games?

I'll bet they're very STRICT too...or do you mean "stick" as in "stick up your ass," or "stick it in your ass," or "you have to learn to drive a stick shift?" 😛

Uh yeah I mean strict it up your ass 😉

Find an arcade that has Hard Driving, maybe it's just my memory as a teen lying to me. But I remember that game being exactly like driving a real car haha.

However you end up beginning your foray into the world of driving, I highly, highly recommend booking even just one (possibly two) lesson once you get closer to taking the driving test.

Ensure you request an instructor that is familiar with the area where you will be taking your test as they can actually walk (well drive) you through all of the twists and turns of the test, where you will be going, and point out the "trick" areas (30 zones, etc.). I did this before I took mine and when I got to the actual test it was like I had already done it. Just a huge help!

Thanks I'll keep that in mind.
