I'm not sure if this should go in Operating System or Hardware, so I flipped a coin and chose this forum.

I have a computer (1400, 256MB RAM, WinXP Home) that recently sustained apparent lightening damage to the modem. It has been replaced and it works fine.

If the USB printer is connected when you boot, the CD tray opens when you boot, and if you push the button to close it, it just opens again. If you put a CD in it and try to read it, it ejects before it can mount the device.

Anybody ever heard of this???

Any suggestions???

I know there was a virus that did something like that...I always thought that was a pretty funny virus. Other than that, have you seen if it does it in safe mode? Have you tried the cdrom on another computer?

Either hardware failure of the drive, or virus (there indeed was one that specifically did this)

Bill,
Thanks for the tip on Hardware failure (I have already scanned for viruses). I will try sticking in a new CD-RW and see what it does.

The other thing to try is take the ATA cable off the drive and turn the PC on. Does it still react like that? If so you can bet it's not a virus that does it. I had a drive die on me once that would always open up after I closed it. Even did this with no data cable on it.
