this is the card i want to get in hopes of softmodding it to a 9800 pro

has anyone had good luck or bad luck doing this?

Why don't you just see if you can get a used 9800pro from the FS/FT forum?
I saw a 9800pro for 170.00 (only 21.00 more than your SE) and also saw a 9800np for 130.00.

I dont know why everyone wants to chance it with these SE's.

You have a 50/50 shot that it will work for ya from what I have seen.

I agree with Keysplayr, and you can get a used Pro or NP for the same/less price with no risk at all.
But if you really want an SE, both the one you've linked and this softmod to Pro, their stock speeds are the same of the pro, so you don't need to overclock to make it a Pro, just softmod. I have the C3, and I am very happy with it, from what I heard both have a percentage of 70-80% for a sucess softmod.
But stay away from the 128bit SEs, such as C3L and others, those suck in performance and they only softmod to 9500Pro.

yeah i was just planning on installing the omega drivers to do it, and if i can't the SE is a pretty decent card right?

im not a HUGE gamer

I think the 9800SE is just a scooch faster than a 9600XT. And only becuase of its 256 bit memory bus.

That's right, and the performance gap becomes even wider using high AA/AF settings.
