Going to be playing softball this year and am wanting to buy my own bat. What should I be looking for in a one?

A lot of leagues make certain bats illegal. Just make sure you find out what the league rules are before you go and buy a new bat.

Generally they just say the bat must be ASA approved -- most softball bats you can buy will be. Never hurts to double check before you get a nice bat first, though.

Nice bat, but a composite. Composites hit farther but you have to use them above 55 degrees. Plus after about 1000 hits performance decreases. It takes about 300 hits to break one in. Probably overkill for slowpitch.

This isn't true.

It varies bat to bat, but composite bats tend to get better over time. Check out EBAY for original Miken Freaks. I have seen them sell up to 5 times the original cost because they are broken in. The temperature statement isn't a guarantee, but it won't break after a game. I have played in numerous games in the 40-50 F range and my bats are fine.


However, the bat really doesn't make that much difference. It won't make you a home run hitter. It may give a few extra yards, but don't expect the bat to be a game changer. Some feel different when you swing due to where the put the end load or if it is balanced. You need to swing a few.

I personally like mikens and worth bats.
 
Assuming you are an adult, you'll typically look for a 28oz/34" softball bat. Other than that, it's based on how much you want to pay. I bought a Nike 30oz/34" softball bat that was on sale for $40 (from $80) and I feel like it hits just as good as the $300 28oz/34" softball bat my team coach brings for our games.

I'm not a pro, though, this is my first year of playing softball. Still learning myself. I do know one thing though.....playing softball in an organized environment is one of the most fun things I've done in a while.

I live in a softball crazy area and some of the smaller fields completely ban composite bats.
 
As for me, don't use a bat that can only hit the ball, be like me, don't just hit the ball, slice the ball in two by using a sword. Swords are also useful to convince pompous umpires to see things your way.
