Sodium Silicate Engine Destruction

I agree, they could have implemented a better solution to ensure the vehicles don't get resold. Change the titles to non recoverable salvage and part them out / recycle them. It is painful to see a good engine destroyed like that when it could be parted out. At least they can still be recycled.

I hate to see perfectly running cars ruined like this 🙁

That Volvo S80 they killed was mint!

So "clunker" is a new word for "non-Prius", redefined by the same political crowed that redefined "change" to mean "communism" so it was easier for the general public to swallow?

These videos are disgusting. I've yet to see a single true "clunker".

I'm sure one person who frequents the Garage must be ecstatic watching this.

On the other hand, it's pretty sick that even a 1 yr old Lotus would be scrapped just the same and considered a clunker if traded in for a Prius... /puke /puke and more /puke

Thats what they do other than the engine and chassis. And the engine is still recycled along with the chassis.

And nobody is cashing a 1 year old lotus in for $3500 in this program off a prius. That would just be stupid since a lotus would be worth a lot more as just a regular trade in.

What they should do is allow someone to swap a car with same or worse mileage for one of the condemned clunkers.
That way if there is a family that has an even worse clunker but can't afford a new car, they can swap it for a higher mileage newer clunker and have their older one destroyed in its place.

Except the point isn't to help consumers, it's for global warming fanatics to get their rocks off seeing "gas guzzlers" permanently removed from the planet.

Step 1) continually introduce progressive incremental legislation to steadily increase mileage and emissions such that high performance engines eventually aren't manufactured anymore in the future. Obviously they can't eliminate or ban existing large engines without huge political backlash or violent revolt.

Step 2) devise a scheme by which to trick people into trading in existing large engine vehicles and permanently destroy them so their supply dwindles. Recycling parts or allowing clunker for clunker swapping or doing anything sensible and resourceful would be enabling someone else to repair and drive the hated evil "gas guzzler" they are emotionally hellbent on destroying until everyone on the planet drives a smug "green" car.

Think long term. Sneaking it up on you slowly, a little bit at a time, is the only way Al Gore copycats can get away with anything like that.

An absolute waste.

Nice to see that your government is as fucking stupid as ours (UK).

All this is doing is bolstering new car sales and helping out the car manufacturers. It has absolutely nothing to do with being environmentally friendly.

Can't they take the damn thing apart and reuse the parts for people who choose to keep their cars? Destroying engines like this is surely "environmentally friendly", nevermind the energy that was used to make the engine is wasted.

Somebody cashed in an older corvette that easily was worth over $4500.

Never underestimate the stupidity of people.

That is physically painful to watch. Perfectly good machinery destroyed for a purely emotional reason.

ZV

If you think that was painful don't watch this -

OUCH!

Tidy car becomes a clunker 🙁

there are all kinds of videos in that thread too

Go down fighting 4.0!

Those I-6s don't do anything quickly, especially die.
Damn, respect for that cherokee, its engine will not quit!

This, or something like it. There must be something we can see done with all these vehicles that potentially have years left on them. Donate them to poor people or something.

The "cash for clunkers" thing has nothing to do with "helping" anybody. All it's actually doing is putting people in debt who can't really afford a new car payment.

The whole thing is nothing more than a thinly disguised effort by SUV-and-anything-that-isn't a-Prius hating liberal environmentalist nut jobs to get their rocks off permanently destroying a few older V6/V8 "gas guzzlers" while simultaneously banking that no new ones will be made because of new laws.

Destroying a nearly brand new truck from the looks of it; I mean the headlights haven't even started to turn yellow or anything. Pathetic politics.

"clunker" = "non-hybrid"

This to a fricken T.

What a freaking joke. My kid's going to be paying for this shit for decades...

Yep, its nice to see that tax payers' dollars (or pounds for the UK scheme) are being put to good use. What a joke.

What the hell? :|

This angers me. I had no idea thats what they were doing with them. What a crock of shit.

Put valve grinding compound in the oil and run it against the rev limiter. It will lose compression pretty fast!

Yeah it's a waste. That's what big government does. Better get used to it. 🙁

I did this to an old mower engine once.

The bearings got so sloppy, the flywheel began to rub against the magneto. Made a horrible racket.

I shut it down to adjust the magneto position, and couldn't get it started again. Couldn't get enough compression with hand cranking, I guess.

The ridge in the cylinder wall was crazy, 0.08" :Q
