When you read the fine print on the bottle, it always says "no purchase necessary to enter" followed by a description telling you how to get your free game piece.

Why do they state this on the bottle? Is there a some type of regulation where companies must make contests and drawings free regardless of a purchase?

correct
you cannot limit any contest to only those who will purchase an entry. Forcing a customer to make a purchase to qualify for contest entry is unlawful.

I think it's about discrimination against the poor and how there can't be a purchase required to enter a contest.

But then you always have those contests where you're entered if you buy an item (PC part sites, especially).

I always thought it was to bypass the gambling/lottery laws and regulations.

I miss the days when the cap actually said whether or not you won, then you just hand in the cap for a free bottle. Now it's a code on the cap or some bullshit, no thanks.

Geekbabe probably mails out thousands of self stamped envelopes a day requesting free bottle caps. Nothing's for free, not even free bottle caps.

I doubt that. She enters all of her contests for free.

I wish they would go back to those, most of the contests I see these days require you to visit a website and enter the code from the cap to see if you won anything.

I think if you need to buy something to enter, it becomes a lottery, and then you need some sort of license, etc...

hell, Coke's basically abandoned that whole idea of contests and is using codes for points. I remember the days of being excited that I was the 1 in 6 for a free pop, as I got them a lot. Now, it seems whenever Mt Dew has the promotion, its 1 in 10 or 1 in 12, or one of the online code entry for a big sweepstakes.

Lol, my friend would get so mad with these contests. Every time we bought these, I would win like 90% of the time. He never won.

When I was a kid in the good old 1 in 6 days... three of us went to the gas station to buy pops... we came home with 7 thanks to winning caps.

Yup, not a chance that I'll go to the website.

Which is why I doubt she sends out SASE's to enter contests.

I just hung a small bag off the side of the giant returnables box in our break room. No one else seems to want to bother with all those caps. 15 = free music download, 90 = free DVD. Although, it's a pita to enter the codes, because you have to do it one at a time.
