SOCKS5... explain?

I just read a little bit about how a proxy server works. Sounds great in theory: it allows two firewalled computers to connect "directly" by acting as a liaison between them.

The theory only goes so far... how do I set up such a service? I want to use the proxy server option on ICQ so that I can do a file transfer with someone. Is it something that most people normally pay for? I.e. some company out there will let you use their server as a proxy server?

Hmm, I can't answer the question, but the people in the networking forum should be able to offer you help 🙂
