Socket754 vs Socket939

I'm currently thinking on an Athlon 64 3200+, however, i'm yet to decide which socket CPU to get.

If the 939 CPU is like $40-50 more expensive (and the mobo would be cheaper too), then why shouldn't i just go s754? Consdering that the performance gain is not really that huge.

The only other thing i can possibly think of right now is compatibility in terms of future upgrades. However (assuming that i'll still be holding on to the same mobo when i upgrade), can you guys give me your opinion on something like this:

ASRock "K8 COMBO-Z" ALi M1689 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 and 939:

Also i'm a little confused between the registered and unbuffered memory. I can use unbuffered memory on either 939 or 754 right? Will the RAM i choose be affected by what Socket i choose?

Yeah, the main reason to go S939 is upgrade path, mainly related to PCIe, but there are also the Winchester-core chips, like the S939 3200+, which overclock effortlessly to pretty high speeds (2.6 is a common target). You can get a Chaintech VNF4/Ultra with one PCIe x16 slot for $120, and with that low of a price I think it's worth it to build that way at the moment unless you've already invested in an expensive AGP graphics card.

I wouldn't recommend the double-socket ASRock--ALi chipset.

The memory you choose is not affected by the socket, even when overclocking--see here.

I too am interested in this question....

I just got a 6800GT AGP and I am wondering if I should also upgrade my CPU.. I currently run a Athlon xp 2500...

I would hate to upgrade my mobo and cpu right now only to see that I am dead ended.. but I'm not sure when I will want to upgrade again anyways...

LordSegan,

I'm sure you will not regret getting a socket 754 AGP motherboard. By the time you need to upgrade again there will be things more interesting than socket 939 out anyway.
