socket478 cpu for asus p4s333

this may be a n00b question, but i've got an old Socket 478 Asus P4S333 1.7Ghz w/ 1.5gigs of ram

can i slam a newer 3.2gig 800mhz FSB cpu in there w/o problems? or am i limited to, say, a 2.0gig w/ 400mhz FSB?

i really dont want to upgrade MB now, since i'm waiting for my 'dream system' of 2 dual core procs w/ SLI ... i know i probably shouldn't hold my breath for this system, but i am allowed to dream ... right. 😉

P4-2.60 GHz (400 FSB, L2 cache:512KB) is the fastest processor you are going to get on that board with BIOS version 1007. If this is a good overclocking board (check on asus forums), maybe slapping this processor in and overclocking isnt too bad. However, since it costs $130 US for 2.6 400FSB (and it has no Hyperthreading), I would not waste my money.

Save a bit and step up to socket 939 A64 3000+. Now here is the problem -- right now you shoudl go with PCIe videocard. I dont know what card you have. If your card is slower than 9800Pro, it mght be good to get a new cpu mobo and videocard. Keep the ram. Even if it is PC2700, it wont be much of a bottleneck. I personally woudlnt wait for an SLI rig.

RS, thanks for the reply, as for the p4s it's not a "great" OC board, nor am i an experienced OC'er ...

i'm not really into gaming (anymore) but i did get an ATI 8500dv card in it which i use it primarily for music/video editing (and some light 3d). i just need a little boost for video compression and encoding.

i'm still optimistic about my 2 'dual core' SLI system. better yet, 2 dual core 64's w/ SLI. is that too much to ask for?! 😱
