Socket370 Motherboard w/1.3processor $5AR

Rebate isn't from Tiger Direct. Manufacturer's rebate from Syntax.

Jumped on this one.

What is performance like on these? how do they compare to other processors? would they be a good replacement for a p3 700 for my parents who do mostly web browsing

IMHO this might not be such a good deal unless you already have a PCI video card. I don't see an AGP slot on the picture of the board nor do I see "integrated video" in the specs. PCI vid cards are kind of expensive (supply & demand) so if you don't already have a PCI card you'd probably be more than $10 just to use the $10 board. Good deal for those with a spare PCI vid card and want a cheap linux box.

They both have onboard video.

Not bad for a web surfing box.

the p3 700 is better..

Beware though, every review of Via C3 processors I've seen has them performing much slower than real P3 CPUs, yet Syntax is claiming a C3 at only 850 MHz is a "1300+" / "1.3 Gigapro."

Based on the reviews, a duron, p3, or even celeron at 800 MHz would all smoke this C3 chip. Also in some older reviews they encountered compatibility issues, implying the C3 design might have gotten one or two parts of its intel emulation wrong (but Via might have corrected this by now).

There's no point in even considering the performance of a C3, because it's worse than (anything) > Celeron 500. Only positive things are: cool running, cheap, 133MHz memory bus boosts the (poor) integrated video , but not enough to make it competitive with any vidcard circa '98 or newer.

Both of these (this thread and the repost 3 minutes later) and their deceptive "1.3" titles, are fishy. Why is it that somehow, some way, anything having to do with Tiger Direct always has some funny goings on? It's almost like they can't help but be underhanded out of practice.

Richardito, wouldn't it be better to explain why people are not going to get their rebate, do you have any personal experience with this particular deal ?

i admit tigerdirect would not be my first choice to buy from, but i've received all my rebates that i've bought from them.

as for the deal, u get what you pay for, it's not designed to be used as a game pc, but it's quick enough to use as a media pc for divx/dvd.

No, it is not fast enough to be a media PC. A C3 850/integrated board will not play back full-res Divx without hiccups.
