I might if they include pacifica support in the m2 but don't include it in 939. I have 939dual-sata2 so upgrade path should a little easier with the m2 upgrade socket. I don't like the thought of having to switch ram around though. I really don't think m2 is that much better. My current system is overclocking to 2.57ghz so i don't think the performance aspect will be worth it. I use VM quite a bit so pacifica is important to me. If they can make VM just as fast as the host operating system; i will be quite happy.

Because these guys' computers are worth more than their cars. For 6 months, anyway.

I won't switch sockets until DDR2 speeds are high enough and latencies are low enough that it performs better than DDR... or until AMD stops making socket 939 processors. Which ever comes first.

What speeds are you looking for from DDR2?? And what latencies?? Cuz DDR2 latencies are starting to come down as speed goes up...they are still pricey but I bet with Intel and AMD making DDR2 prices will come down even more

EDIT: And I'll bet my next paycheck AMD took the higher latencies into account while designing this new socket so I bet it wont be as much of an issue

Probably when 800 MHz (effective) CAS3 DDR2 is out, and comparable in price to CAS2 PC3200 I'll consider it better than DDR.

OP: Socket 940 is old, it's their server socket. To the best of my knowledge the M2 is something else yet.

These are all good points, i think ill wait for the price to drop too. Who was talking about the pacifica thing on the m2 board? i dont know what that is but anandtechs preview said the new boards will have it! what is it anyways?

when it comes out is probably when i will switch back to amd and maybe pick up a skt939 agp board(not sure which chipse, nf3, uli 1689, uli1695....) along with a 3200venice and o/c it to 2.4 w/ an xp90 since prices for the "old" 939 venices should be cheap then.

I believe the PCI-ex controller is coming onto the cpu but that will be Socket F (or something like that) with 1200 pins (around that much).

The DDR2 controller with be 667 and I believe that DDR2 latencies and prices are now down to where it makes sense.

Another poster stated that the 940 pin is old (the original Opteron). This 940 pin is incompatible with the old 940 pin but is still 940 pin.
