Socket AM2 preview

Hum. I remember Toms first preview of a A64 put it at the same performance as a same-clocked AXP. That sure turned out to be BS.

I read, on this site I believe, that AM2 is not ready and still needs tweaks as it's current performance is no better then current CPUs. Looks spot on then.

That said, AMD needs to up the performance on this chip. Intel is claiming a 20% lead with it's next CPU. I'd hate to see AMD fall behind again.

I htink the general consensus is that AM2 will at best only offer minimal performance gains initially. This will eventually change however, especially as DDR2 continues to improve in performance.

My big question is how long this socket is going to last though. DDR3 surely will be introduced in the near future and will require yet another socket. So skipping AM2 altogether may very well be the best idea for current S939 owners.
