Socket A Processor

I was going to have to rebuild my system, couldn't find any AGP cards that were going to be good enough to keep me going. A friend of mine has a 6800XT AGP card that he will sell me. so instead of starting my NEW build that i had posted for a few days, im going to rebuild my ABIT.

i am wondering, What is the BEST athlon XP slot A processor that can still be found?, and how much should i pay? i found a slot A 2800+ Barton for like 129, cant find anything else.

im gonna upgrade from 1 gig of PC 2100 to 2 gigs of PC 3200, i think im gonna go with

OCZ Value Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model OCZ4002048V3DC-K - Retail

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model F1-3200USU2-2GBHS - Retail

gonna snag 1 250GB Serial ATA150 WD Caviar, to replace my 60 gig maxtor(which i will prolly keep my OS on. and just run games, movies, and music from the WD.

and go ahead and replace onboard sound with a Audigy 2 ZS gamer.

takes me from a 1500 dollar build to a 400 dollar upgrade, which SHOULD get me through another year or so, before i have to go ahead and slam a new build. I just dont wanna spend a ton of money on something when i KNOW that DX 10 is coming soon, which will change all the technology in my box.

what you guys think? decent upgrade?

The best would be a 3200+ Barton, buying a new socket A cpu isn't very smart budget wise. for $129 you could easily get a 754 sempron motherboard cpu combo. I currently have a 2600+ Sempron at 2.32 ghz which kills my parrents 3200+ Barton.

hrmm, drop me a link firsttime?

if i can snag a full upgrade of MoBo and Processor for that cheep, ill do it lol

You can easily find a mb/cpu/2gb pc3200 ram for $400:

$165 for the ram (the ocz value you listed)
$70 max for the motherboard (asus K8N)
$165 for the cpu (a nice 3400+ skt 754 newcastle)

If you need the sound card and hdd also under the $400 budget you'll need to get a bargain basement mb for $50 and drop the cpu down to a 3300+ palermo for $113. That saves you $70...hmm, gonna be tough fitting all of that under $400 actually. gl 🙂

eh but im gonna do a full build next year, i may just stay with the processor i have in there right now, save that money, and go ahead and get the other UG's, those are things that i can put in my full build, and honestly my CPU scores pretty high right now for what it is.

with the new memory, HD, sound and Video i should be fine i THINK.

next year ill go for a big build and go with the new windows OS thats coming out, maybe it will have better drivers than the XP 64 eddition hehehe.

as for those budget MoBo's, NO WAY lol. i always try to go with quality MoBo's, less chance of a melt down =)

thanks for the help so far guys.

is the 6800 XT the best AGP card out there?

the 6800xt ain't the best. For that you'd be looking at the X850XT/X800XT then the 6800GS or X800XL (if at the same price as the 6800GS).

I misunderstood, thought you were looking at buying a socket A cpu.

So what's the budget? $400 for 2gb ram, hdd, sound card and vid card??

yea bud =), i WAS looking at snagging a new Socket A but i figure ill be better off keeping what i have for now, since im doing a full build next year.

now of those cards that you listed for AGP, are those readily available? i know i have been having trouble locating AGP cards, and when i do find them they are listed at ABSOLUTELY rediculous prices hehe

yeah, they are all available. $230 ish for the 6800GS and the x800xl, the X800XT is around $280. Websites i'd check would be newegg, microcenter, allstarshop, mwave and monarch computers.

Here's the motherboard I use, I bought it in the fs/ft forums here for $60 US.

And here's the cpu I have, I got it in a trade.

Also I use some nice Kingston PC3500 Ram which I would highly suggest for overclocking.

Hold onto that socket A, my Barton 3200+ still games like a champ (though the 6800GT @ 430/1140 helps with that). I use it as a second box when others come over to play BF 2, CS:S, COD:2, and R:TW.

It would be pointless upgrading your current computer, because for the cost you could build a cheap socket 754 system that's faster. A sempron with your current ram would be faster tahn your socket A upgrade.

BTW, I'd say mobile athlon xp is still king for socket A.

mobile barton ..perhaps overclocked is the only cost wise way of doing it.... buying new ram for a barton is silly.
staying with an old architecture only good if one can truely minimize costs.
i been using a mobile barton 2400+ @2.2ghz since they practically came out😛

Why would the ram be different? I run PC3200 ram with my Barton, I even tested out my 2x1gb sticks of OCZ in my barton setup for a month and they worked wonderfully. Then they went into my Opty 165 setup. Are you referring to DDR2?

All things considered, when there were still Socket A cpu's on the production line the "BEST" overall Barton was the XP-M 2500 (mobile). It was both unlocked and rated for low voltage, so it ran cooler. You could run them as fast as you could run any XP 3200, and they never cost as much!

AXMH2500FQQ4C - AMD 1.88GHz XP Mobile CPU 87.95

think i should snag that? and that WILL go into my PC right? lol if it runs that good its a cheep UG

Edit: hehe NM lol im just gonna keep the 2400 i have and just wait for the upgrade there, but i am gonna go ahead with 3200 mem, vid card, hd, and sound

Have you tried overclocking your 2400? I only have a 2400+ Barton but it overclocks to 3200+ though it is a mobile.

I think $88 for a 1.88ghz is ridiculous! I paid like $70 or less for my Barton 1.5 years ago. And my NF2-Ultra mobo was only $55 that same time ago. With old tech and low supplies you pay a premium.

I'd recommend hitting up the FS/FT forum if you intend to upgrade your mobo and cpu. Hell if you're strapped for cash you should buy all of your upgrades from there if you can find them. Lots of people getting rid of old AGP cards and whatnot, why pay for new?

I believe it was the end of 2003 that I got my mobile. (or beginning of 2004, right as the 64s were coming out) $50 nforce2 motherboard, $100 mobile 2600+, and I had a cpu able to hit 2.7ghz. I didn't keep it at though, it required cooling beyond my capability, I'm not even willing to run my cpu fan above low speed it's so loud. For a while I was running at 2.4ghz, but I decided even that was too hot and now I run at 2.2ghz but with my memory and fsb at 220mhz. I'm surprised my cheap econo pc2700 memory made it that high. (3-3-3-11 timings btw) I've got latency on par with the best modern P4 chipsets and memory bandwidth above any socket 754 system at stock.

I wouldn't spend ANY money on a socket A system now. Socket 754 is too cheap and way more worth it than faster memory or excessive cooling trying to get a socket A to clock high, especially when a socket 754 sempron will overclock to 2.5ghz on air stable.

Correct in both statements.
Its better to buy a cheap socket 754 or socket 939 setup at this point. Get something that really is faster and has a future.
Also, anything new you buy should NOT have AGP. It should be PCIe, for the same reasons above. If you dont plan on gaming or cant afford a new video card right now, try to get a MB with onboard video AND a PCIe X16 slot.

There are motherboards with AGP8x slots and PCIe slots as well. No compromise there, other than that they may not be the ultimate overclockers. (but from what I remember, they're still pretty damn good)
