whats the big difference between these two sockets? and is one clearly better than the other?

940 accomodates Opterons and the old FX processors, 939 takes regular A64s and the newer FXes. Both sets of chips have dual channel RAM capability, but 940 requires registered RAM. 940 can also be used for multiprocessor systems.
