It depends, do you intend to buy now or in 6 months time.

I you intend to buy no hten it's got to be s940.

If you don't intend to be for 6 months or so then I really can't tell.

m2 is coming out in like 3 months. i've never heard of socket f but whatever it is, if amd is making it, why on earth would they introduce a new socket 3 months after it's previous socket's debut?

socket f is the replacement for socket 940
for workstations and servers

If you can wait 6 months than it might be worth it
if not buy now

DDR2 doesn't seem to be making a large difference on M2 so no idea what it will do for duals/quads

OP, you're making a server and are wondering whether you should buy a s940 motherboard/cpu right now or wait 6 months for a new server socket to come out? if that's the case, you should mention it in the original post :p

I posted this last night to see if anyone would bight. I'll be buying in 4-5 months if I go 940 (NOT AM2) or 6 months if I wait for Socket F (1207 pin AMD LGA socket to replace 940). This will be a Dual socket Dual core workstation, 4 gb ram Win XP x64 dual booted with Linux. The question I supose is whether or not DDR2 in the server space will be worth it, as Dual socket Dual core CAN be bandwidth starved, but it's also latency sensitive. I upgrade often enough that the limited life of 940 is not a huge concern, and we all know it will be around for a good couple years, as server sockets take a long time to die out.

This would be the configuration of the 940 rig:
Supermicro H8DCE mobo
2x Opteron 270
4x 1GB REG ECC RAM, haven't decided exactly what sticks
8 port SATA RAID controller, PCI-e, haven't decided brand
4x 250 GB HDD from current rig
7800 GT from current rig
Audigy 2 ZS Gamer from current rig
Haven't decided on PSU yet, but it needs to give >700w and be SSI compatible with a 24 pin, 8 pin and 4 pin mobo connector, and the PC P&C one is just too overpriced
Powercool PCI-e TV tuner card, to replace current one, because Haupauge doesn't want to support 64-bit
DVD burner from current rig

for a server i would go a trusted and tried skt, as in 940. there are always some issues with new skts/platforms and you don't want that in a server enviornment, imo.

It's a workstation, thought, not a server. It's not mission critical, or even mission important. Preformance is a concern more than 100% uptime.

I would say if your not planing on buying right away wait and see what kind of performance comes from the new socket/memory

But even saying that I don't like to be an early adopter so would probably still go with the 940

Yeah, it's a tough call, that's why I ask.

Yeah, ok.... I'll be using it for photochop (GIMP actually), some video editing, some 3d work, Gaming, Folding, and of course day to day activities. I, personally, am very clever, for your reference. I started college at 15 and consistently score in the 99 percentile on standardized tests.

There is some really intriuging (sp?) information circulating on the web right now concerning socket F, I think it'll be easier for you to decide as more details are unveiled. IMHO quad-core and DDR2 are just the beginning...

Yeah, but what's going to happen with the socket in a year doesn't concern me, as I upgrade frequently.

If you had read the thread you would know that the question was whether or not socket F will be worth waiting a couple months over rather than going with socket 940. I care about the sockets short term activities.

I was referring to details available on launch. (are we on the same page now?)

Yes, we are now on the same page. I was confused by your phrase "just the beginning..."
