Socket 939 vs Socket 754

I retract my previous statement as it appears that the only advantages the Nforce chipset has over the SiS and VIA chipsets are:

1) Single Chipset Design
2) Integrated Gigabit Ethernet Support
3) 4X Serial ATA Headers

So, go with whichever one is cheaper and fits your plans. 939 for future upgradability, or 754 for "cheap" performance.

my only fear about upgradability is amd will move the next generation of cpus, their dual core cpus, to even a different pin platform, forcing us to change again. it's a trend amd has started and i don't see it changing.

Multicore CPUs are actually supposed to be supported on s939, so that might be one more reason for you to grab a 939 board now insted of later.

Exactly. The 3700 late next year for cheap is not as much an upgrade to the 4200+ or dual core late next year so I would go with the 939 especially with the 3000+ 939 chip overclocking to 2600 on good air cooling for $180.00 dollars. MMMM Overclocking 180.00 chip to = 850.00 dollar chip. Lovely

Where are you getting these prices?

Mwave.com mobo bundle

FarCry Game
Socket 754
Chaintech VNF3-250
Retail boxed Athlon 64 Newcastle 3000+
$222

And yes this is by far the better deal. 939 mobos arnt there. Plus 60% more money for what? Less performance?

A 3000 754 is faster than a 3000 939 due to 200 more Mhz which dual channels 5% can't hope to recover from.

I would say wait for nForce4 and get a board that ALREADY has PCI-e so you don't hafta get a new MOBO later. You would still have the option of 754 vs 939, but you would proly want the 939 anyways, as the boards with single PCI-e graphics slots and 939 were projected to be around $150.
ya, but can you show me evidence that PCIe will overtake AGP significantly in the next...3yrs?? I'm not convinced.

Not only that, your gonna be able to get a used x800/6800 for real cheap in for sale forums when all of us upgrade to PCIe cards.

hmm, didn't expect such opposition to the 939 socket. I'll have to reconsider.
