I went to an opteron 180 from an fx55 and saw a huge improvement in apps that could benefit from dual-core and zero improvement from everything else. I figured that it would future-proof me for another year. Then I got a big raise, the e6750 came out, and the rest is history...

realistically you will get an extra year or two out of your s939 system with a high-end dual core vs the fx55. Some current games take advantage of multi-core, but most future games/apps will.

I think, as far as gaming goes, you're probably being held back more by your 1GB of RAM than you are by anything else in your system. I'd look into an Opteron 180, plus another GB of TCCD, if I were you.

Do you need extra CPU power in games? I'd get another 1gb of ram first, and decide on buying a dualcore when you really need it for games. Unless you of course use a lot of apps that can utilize both cores, then it would be worth it to get a x2 3800+ or so and oc it to 2.6ghz, or higher if you can. 2.6ghz is pretty much gauranteed though.

NewEgg has X2 3800+ for $65 or something. Opteron 165 is under $100, I believe. Both are excellent choices with 165 almost guaranteed OC to 2.70~2.80GHz.

Yeah...I'm thinking about the 3800. I may just jump to an x1950xt to hold me over until the new DX10 boards come out.

Upgraded from 3800 to an opteron 175. Now that I've played a few of the latest games, I'm definitely going to upgrade to an Intel C2D or quad within the next few months.

I'm getting an x1950xt this week from a forum member. I'm excited :-D

My biggest worry is the possible sacrifice in clock speed. If I go from the 2.82 to say...2.6 with an OC I wonder how much I'm going to feel it, ya know?

I think you'll find that even a 3800+ X2 overclocked to 2.4GHz would help in newer games. Most new stuff is starting to take advantage of dual core CPUs.

You might alsoc sonsider selling your S939 and getting a cheap C2D rig with a Pentium Dual Core E2140 (C2D with 1MB cache). The CPU overclocks easily to 2,8-3,2 GHz, DDR2 RAM is super cheap, and good OC Board like the Gigabyte P35 DS3 are under 100$ as well. Might be a little more expensive than getting a Socket S939, but the RAM and Board may last you a while.
I did the same thing, sold my DDR1 OC RAM, got me a used C2D + new Board + new RAM, and now I need to sell the S939 Board and Athlon 64 4000+. The upgrade will have cost me like 60? in the end, and it's almost incredible how much faster my new system is.

sheesh, that is sweet! sometimes you just have to keep your eyes open for the deals...

you will feel it going from 2.82 to 2.6 in many instances. It sucks big time, too, because you just upgraded and you feel that you should be faster, not slower. I think that the biggest reason than I ended up going the c2d route was that I was disappointed in my opteron 180 upgrade from the fx55. The opteron still runs great, it's just running great in my wife's file server instead of in my web-surfing/light gaming/dc everyday system. If you don't end up being really close to the 2.82 then you'll probably be disappointed and upgrade again as soon as money permits.
