socket 939 upgrade

AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 San Diego 2.8GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

Would this be the best/ fastest cpu I could put in my msi neo2 platinum? I've got a 3200+ in there right now.

Are you willing to overclock? Best bet is a (rev 6) CD 3800+ and make into 5600+ for $120, second best bet is Opteron 170 for $190 and make into FX62.

I don't suggest buying single core at all.

Opteron 165 is ok deal but your board won't be able to get much out of it as it's HTT limited.

Well I built my original system with oc'ing in mind and besides the video card just couldn't get myself to put in the work to oc the proc. (I remember reading your guide). I think I should be realistic this time and say no, I'm not going to oc. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry for my laziness here but can I ask if it's as simple as popping out the 3200+ and replacing it with the 3800+ you suggested? No bios flashes or changes, etc.?

Without OC the X2 4400+ is a nice CPU for $200. I spent twice that on mine a few months before the price dropped... needless to say I was hacked. :disgust:

For $70 less an X2 3800+ would also be a great choice on the budget end.

And if you want the top preformance go for an FX-60. (Only $360 at ZZF)

Not likely.

If you go for an FX series you might. It depends on the motherboard and what bios you bought it with, and what you have on it now. Just check the motherboard website to check and see.

It's usually just a simple swap.
