I'm looking to get two dual core AMD cpu's one for my server, and one for my main rig.
First i decided to get two X2 3800+ cpu's but then i saw reports of socked 939 dual core Opterons coming out soon.

Opteron 165 ( 1.8GHz 1024kb) $417
Opteron 170 ( 2.0GHz 1024kb) $unknown
Opteron 175 ( 2.2GHz 1024kb) $530

Here's the X2's for reference:
X2 3800+ ( 2.0GHz 512kb) $354
X2 4000+ (nonexistant...coz 1024kb cache models are expensive to manufacture)
X2 4200+ ( 2.2GHz 512kb) $482
X2 4400+ ( 2.2GHz 1024kb $537
X2 4600+ ( 2.4GHz 512kb) $704
X2 4800+ ( 2.4GHz 1024kb $902

Would a socket 939 Opteron 165 (1.8GHz 2x 1024kb cache) work with a DFI?
Might become the cheapest 2x1MB dual core. :)

Yes, yes, but 420 bucks for a 1.8GHz (at stock) CPU is a bit too much for my taste. If it was the 2GHz then that's be fine, but 1.8...

Actually, I believe that the Opteron 144/146 are suppose to be around the same price of the 3000/3200 Venices. So that's definitely a good deal.

yes this is true, the 144 should be quite the deal, just need to make sure that your mobo can do around 333HTT, as alot of these are hitting aorund the 2.8 - 3.0Ghz range, and you dont want to be held back by your mobo.

I'm assuming coupled with a:
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
OCZ Plat. Rev. 2 --2x512mb

I should get a nice OC with these new Opterons ;)

Has anyone determined if these need a bios update on the DFI nf4 ultra, or do they run fine with the bios it ships with?

Um, the Opteron 165,170, and 175 all have 2MB L2 cache

And as for BIOSes, I dont see why you'd need an update as these are older revision cores than, say, Venice E6
