Socket 775 CPUs

No, you need to know what the chipset and BIOS will support.
 
Either Evevest 2.2 or PCWizard 2009 can act as freeware applications that can identify your motherboard, and a plethora of other information.

And on some motherboards, you may have to update the bios to get the board to accept some CPU's on their approved for the board list.

more than likely no.

if the machine has a pentium D, it was probably before core 2 was out;.


so you are probably stuck with p4 / pentium D and below.
 
yeah you need a compatible chipset AND BIOS. Dell unfortunately is notorious for not releasing updated bioses. Alot of their mobos also use the still-born BTX form factor (which is like betamax was superior but never adopted) which prevents you from doing an easy mobo swap...
