Socket 754

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of upgrading my system to AMD Sempron 3100+ socket 754. Currently I'm using AMD Athlon XP 2600+. But I'm wandering whether it is worth da money. Will AMD still support Sempron for quite a while? Or they will try to sink it to the bottom in no time? Because I heard dat socket 754 won't last dat long. Hope to hear some suggestion from u all.
Thanks.

Cheers

AFAIK the Sempron 3100+ is barely if at all an upgrade over your 2600+

You should go with an A64 if you want to make the platform switch.

If you can't afford the A64 right now, get the Sempron and upgrade to an A64 later, you will be happier with the 64 for sure.

Oh yeah, go ahead and buy S754, it's not like it will be dead within a month.

Actually, the Sempron 3100+ (and only the 3100+) is a pretty sweet processor for the price, beating out every Pentium processor lower than a 3.2E on Doom 3 speed test. Check out the Anandtech Processor Test.

Honestly though, you'd probably enjoy the extra speed for the buck you'd get for boosting to a Athon 64 2800+ or 3000+. On newegg.com, a retail box Sempron 3100+ costs you $124, while the retail Athlon 64 2800+ will cost you $141 and the Athlon 64 3000+ $164. You'd see a pretty big performance boost by moving to these processors, and you'll be ready for any 64 bit programs (Win XP 64bit, HL2, etc) that can take advantage of the 64Bit technology when it becomes more popular.

Remember, going to 64 bits may delay how long you can go without upgrading again. But the Sempron 3100+ should be alright.
