Socket 754 Sempron Overclock VS AXP Overclock

It's getting to be that time again -- time to upgrade!

Currently I'm running an Abit NF7 v2 with an Athlon XP 2500+ (non mobile) @ 2.4 ghz (219x11). I heard a lot of good things about the Socket 754 Sempron 2600+ when overclocked. I heard most hit 2.5 ghz but I am not sure. Would it be a wise move to spend the $72 for the Sempron 2600+ and ~$80 on a NForce3 Socket 754 motherboard to upgrade from my 2500+ @ 2.4ghz and overclock? I have pretty decent RAM so overclocking shouldn't be a problem (Kingston HyperX DDR400)

the 2800+ is a better buy since it's got more cache and tends to overclock better.

Well I don't know about the overclocking part, but I would def get the 2800+, since it does have all that extra cache. The difference between 128 and 256 is way more than the difference between 512 and 1MB because the benefits of extra cache aren't linear.

Yes, overclocking the Sempron would give you a big performance boost over the XP, but is it worth it? A 2.4 Ghz Xp is no slouch (matches the 533 FSB 3.0GHZ P4s I think) and unless you really need it, you shouldn't get the sempron.

I think I'll just go for the A64 2800+. I'll probably have it for a while (I've had this 2500+ more than a year and half) so the 64-bit compatibility will be a plus.

Looks like it's time to sell my 2500+ and NF7.

I just recently went s754 and bought a Sempron 3300+, this from an old rig of NF7-S V2 and XP 2700+ (very similar case to yours). It's in a SFF case and the processor is great! It has x86-64 extensions because it is a revision E6 processor, and I have successfully clocked up to 2.7GHz so far from 2.0GHz stock - I haven't gotten around to pushing it to the max yet, but I expect near the 2.8GHz range (RAM divider with Corsair VS 1GB DC DDR400).

I have a s754 Sempron 2600+ (1.6ghz 128 cache) running @ 2.3ghz on default voltage and stock cooling. This is with a Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo and Kingston Value Ram (PC3200). In the whole build I had about $280, which included the CPU ($72), Mobo ($58),
XClio PSU ($53), and refurb Sapphire 9800pro 256 bit 128MB ($86). I had the memory and the HD laying around in storage. Not a bad price and it oc's well.
