Well, I guess I didn't press all the way down on the chip. But I've installed four different Socket 754 A64 procs and well :(

It looks more like it melted than anything, possibly too much current? I would RMA the mobo and processor if you cant get them to work if I were you because this doesn't look like your fault.

Can you heat the 2 pins up to the point where it softens, then you can move it a .00001mm, then repeat process until the pins are straight again? Now, how you heat the pins up...

No, they are smushed. They look melted, but they are smushed.

I wonder if my mobo is fried. I hope not :(

can we get a schematic of the chip? If they are grounds, you might be okay by just removing them......

I had a friend bend 2 rows of pins on his 3.0 ghz 800mhz FSB Northwood cpu like right when they came out (he paid some sick amount of money for the cpu, but it's held up supprisingly well), I manged to bend them all back and get it working fine again using a big maginfying glass and a dental tool took about 2 hrs when all was said and done and the pins don't look quite straight in some cases but still sit in the socket correctly. In many cases if you have a small peice of wire similar in gauge to the cpu pins you can place that in the socket and have it make contact w/ the cpu if that a required pin. its like replacing the pin just got to make sure the wire is the correct legnth/height. Hope this helps.... :)

Well, I called AMD. They said I could send it in but he wasn't sure if they would be able to. He said they could replace it with a courtesy chip, but that's not a guarantee.

I'm going to try the MotherboardRepair guy first. If he can't get it working, then I'll send it to AMD.

um, its up to you but i would send it to manufacturer first. if the mobo guy messes it up, the manufacturer will prolly thinks its been messed with and not help u.

oh, besides what the hell are you doing with a 3200+ xp. just spend $100 bucks get a 2600+ xp mobile and oc it, its frightening easy. I am running 2.4ghz on my 2600+ on air and some ppl have it in the 2.5-2.6ghz on air.

What was that for? Yes nick was being a bit abrasive with his comments but he's pretty much right. You may want to reconsider the way you phrased that because it was totally uncalled for. Telling him to lighten up or disagreeing with him is one thing but you crossed the wide line into ignorance country.

I broke 2 pins putting together my first build. First, I cried, then I screamed, then I did what a real man would do. I looked at the warranty and read that bent or broken pins constitute user error and no warranty. Then I sucked it up and bought a new one. It was a $160 lesson I will never forget, BUT IT WAS MY FAULT. I SCREWED UP. I BOUGHT A NEW ONE.

I doubt the mobo guy will make a mess. He has some pictures of his soldering skills, I couldn't even see what he did. It all looked like it came out of a manufacturing plant.

Well, I'm going to take a chance and RMA it if the mobo guy can't fix it.

I called AMD today about if it would be covered and he said probably not, but he wouldn't be able to tell me for sure, his manager would have to see the chip. He said he'd start up some RMA papers for me, but I'd told him I'd hold off. He said that there are no guarantees, but they often do courtesy chip thing. Where they send me a new chip just because they rock so much.

BTW, both pins have fallen off. :( I found one pin though.
