Socket 754 Processor now Socket 752 processor

I pulled a 3200+ out of my machine about two weeks ago.

It was working fine. I also took off the retail HSF.

Today, I finally get my new mobo, put in the CPU, it falls into place as it usually does, I secure it in via the level. Add everything else, doesn't turn on. I turn off the PSU, can swear I smell a burning smell, immediately take out everything. First thing I look at is my CPU's pins.

Two of them are bent/smushed.

The HSF I was installing was a Thermaltake Venus 12+ and as I was securing that via it's level thing, it sounded like my motherboard was going to snap in half. I'm pretty sure the cause of the bent pins is attributable to the HSF (these things are smushed, I mean, smushed.) It worked when I took it out of it's case, it was put in one of the OEM CPU containers and wasn't touched for two weeks. I apply some Arctic Silver by holding the chip at its edges, put in the mobo (arrows aligned).

So, now I have a Socket 754 processor with two bent pins. I know there is a guy who repairs broken pins off processors, but since I ran the proc, so even if I could repair the pins, the proc is most likely dead? Huh?

RMA it.

Moron, its not the CPU manuf's fault that the cpu got bent pins. Hell, maybe I should send my car back to the dealership because I put a small dent in it.....n00bs like you are hurting the industry

That's not ethical! There was nothing wrong with it from the manufacturer. Everyone has to pay when people RMA stuff because they screwed it up themselves.

Yeah. RMA = waste of time. They will take one look at the bent pins and say tough luck. You might want to read their warrenty BouZouki.

Or euthanize yourself

There is no way I could have bent those though. So, what do I do with this $150 broken chip?

well they obiously were not bent because it was already in a machine when you pulled it. 😕

They dont bend on their own man. There could have been somthing in the socket holes or you just didnt get it seated as well as you thought. But regardless, if the cpu WAS working and now the pins are bent, you had to have done something

hmm.. that seems very odd.

if you put it in the socket incorrectly, most if not all the pins would be bent..

did you look at the socket, and make sure there was nothing obstructing those 2 pins imparticular.. they looked SMUSHED not BENT..

Yeah, they don't really look pent. More like flattened.

Like I said above, there was probably something in the socket

I meant like, just magically bent.

And this is what I guess happened:
He tossed the chip in and didnt fully depress the chip into the socket so those couple pins were lifted a bit, since they are so close to the one edge where the retention mechanism first moves they got caught and didnt slide in when he put the heatsink on..

Try the credit card trick. Don't worry man I bent my CPU pins too. After some very carefull meneuvering I got my pins straight. Working great right now.
I can't tell if your pins are bent or fried, but it's worth a try.

Credit Card trick?

I don't want to completely break off the pins.

Well, I went to look at the back to see if it was even possible to use a credit card. Flip over the proc and I see one of the pins is missing. Oh noes 🙁

I had a friend that bent 15 pins on his 3.0 prescott and his cpu obviously didn't boot up. He got the pins back straight and its been working fine. So there's a chance that your cpu will be fine.

One of the pins has gone missing.

I've heard of pins missing before on working CPU's it just depends on how important the pins are. I'd try to straiten out the remaining bent pin and try it out. If your sure it was not your fault RMA it. If you have something sitting in the back of your head telling you it was your fault then don't.
