--Socket 754--. Not a good upgrade path!

AMD Roadmap

For all you guys jumping on the AMD64 bandwagon. Looks like AMD only plans to go to 3700.

Looks like the 939 may be worth the wait.

We already know.
But since a mobo replacement is so common with any upgrade as it is...why worry? Just assume it's going to be $100 more next time because of it.

Ok, 939 has real promise, but do you think that dual channel memory processor will be $200 ? I don't think so for quite a while. I should have copied the quote that I just read today, but it was something like "if you wait until the right time for a socket or cpu, you will never buy one again, socket 478 is going to 755, 940 will be around, but add 939, and socket 754 will eventually be value segment, etc....."

whatever dude..... But I will enjoy my $200 OC'ed 3000+ that benches close to a 3400+ stock in the meantime. You can wait and watch......

Actually I've been running my 2.4 at 3.4 gigs for about ohh 7 months.
So I haven't needed to wait and watch.

You shouldn't expect any mobo to offer much of an upgrade path, intel or AMD. Usually by the time that 20% faster CPU drops down to an affordable price there is a new motherboard and CPU combo offering a new FSB speed, better memory, improved design, or all of the above.

So you have a P4 why the hell do you care about AMD? Your not gonna want to use your motherboard or processor in your next system anyways so whats your point?

Like others, I'm always looking out for something new.

In other posts, others have pointed out to me that the 754 chipset was the way to go when I mentioned the 939.
Just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Right now the 754 is the ONLY way to go with AMD..... Its not set in stone that the 939 is gonna be that much faster than 754, sure theoretically it should be a bit faster but its not like 754 is gonna be a slow system, like others have said I know when I get a new processor I normally get a new motherboard because theres always some new tech that I want on it.... Right now AMD 64 3000+ is the best buy of all processors right now in terms of bang for your buck (IMO)

754 is about as dead as 478. Both AMD and Intel just have too many sockets flying around now-a-days.

754 reminds me of 423... a quick death. But, as noted, upgrading a CPU alone isnt that common, with combo's more common.

Besides... you can ALWAYS wait for the next socket... beause there will always be another commin.

Not to mention that waiting will provide for more decent boards with PCI Express. If all goes well in the peripherals and video segments you might need to upgrade your entire computer for PCI Express.

My next upgrade probably won't be until the PCI express boards come out. Along with that new atx case standard whatever it was called. Since I just upgraded and I usually won't again for awhile 3-5yrs usually.

um... and you think whatever you buy now will be worth a tinkers damn after 6 months with ddr 2 and pci express and btx on the horizon? regardless of the socket you pick now, be it 478, 754, 940 or socket A. For some odd reason ppl think this is a new phenomenon. Of the 10 years I have been buying and building PCs I can think of 1 time I replaced a cpu and not the MB and ram.
