Socket 478 vs LGA775?

Hi everyone,

I talked to my brother-in-law last week who said he had an extra P4 3.0E CPU laying around that I could get next time I see them. Yes, I know about the heat issues, and have never really been a huge OC'er, but I certainly won't pass up a CPU like that.

Anyway, I've been searching newegg and this forum looking for a MB to pair up with it, and I am confused on the difference between the 2 sockets. From what I can tell, this Prescott can fit into either one? That seems strange to me, as surely I'd think they have different pin configurations.

Any info you'd have would certainly be appreciated. I'd like to keep it around $100. I see the Abit IC7-Max3 mentioned. Maybe by the time I get around to getting the CPU the MB will be down to around $100.

older prescots are 478 newers are 775, they can not fit into both. The sockets are completely different (pins are on 478 processors, and 775 sockets) so find out which type of chip you are getting, then you can figure out which board to get.

If it's a "3.0E" and not a "5xx" series processor, it has 478 pins and so you should shop for Socket 478 parts.

IF it a 775 then there are some good Gigabyte boards GA-GNXP-Duo it takes both DDR and DDR2 memory (i run that at the moment and like it but its PCIe, i dont know what Graphics Card you have) or ASUS P5GD1 or 2 (1 takes DDR and 2 takes DDR2 only) again its a PCIe board ....

Just ask if the CPU has pins or is flat on the bottom. Pins = Socket 478. Flat = LGA775.
