This is a simple survey to determine how you think these stereotypes and stigmas rank from the least sensitive to the most sensitive. Social acceptability changes over time as morality and society evolve.
The rating is done from 1 being socially acceptable, to 10 being socially very unacceptable.

You can copy and paste the lists below and add a number rating next to them.

I have listed an example of stereotypes and an example list of stigmas. I will list stereotypes that the world has toward Americans. I am comfortable with this since I am American and can agree with many of these.

Stereotypes of Americans (not my list, I found it):

*An embarrassment to their country
*Obese
*Ugly
*Love drugs
*All their women are hookers
*Obsessed with everything red, white and gay
*Obese
*Jealous of Canadians
*Women are short, fat and ugly
*Stink like butter
*Pays an Arab every time they go to the gas station
*Have highest percentage of gay men in the world
*Hysterically unaware of everything around them
*Determined to destroy the environment
*Loud
*emotional
*Obese
*Reserve their leadership for movie stars and inexperienced college kids
*Compost heap of all the trash kicked out of Europe centuries ago
*Men wear panties

Examples of peoples, groups or ideas for which there is a social Stigma:

*Mentally ill
*Physically disabled
*Holocaust denial
*Racial stigmas (being a certain race or color)
*Gay
*Politically conservative
*Alcoholic
*Drug addicted
*Pedophelia
*Religious fundamentalist
*Having tattoos
*Body piercings
*Stay at home dad
*Working mother
*Lacking education
*Workaholic
*Collecting welfare/state assistance
*Being rich (1%)
*Being poor (99%)

some of those stereotypes don't even make sense and never heard of them before.

Based solely on how much I hear them (some I have never heard).

Interesting, alzan. This is truly interesting and I mean that. I would have thought for sure that several of those would have been a 10, because in my mind they are a 10. It goes to show how different we perceive these things.

Maybe I'm putting more into it.

I'm coming at the reality of stereotyping as not necessarily a bad thing; it can be for sure but it can also be a useful tool in helping to find our way to meaningful discourse, relationships, the learning process, etc.

Stigma is entirely different, it's all bad.

I thought that ideally no one should be judged prior to exploring that individual for who they are, but clearly this doesn't always happen. It isn't practical. Stigmas and stereotypes appear to be sensitive subjects, but they get left behind and are replaced with new ones.

They shouldn't but it's an unfortunate reality that they do. I find stereotypes to be accurate enough in a significant percentage of situations that I don't discard them out of hand.

For me, everyone gets a base amount of respect and credence as a fellow human being. As I get to know them better I compare them to the stereotypical category in which society places them. How little or how much they resemble that is noted and based on that I keep or discard the stereotype. I use stereotypes not as judges of character but as indicators of societal mores and emotional health.

That sounds rational and practical. Stereotypes save us time, because when making judgments about danger to ourselves we can't afford to assess everyone individually, all the time. So I like how you put it.

^^

Everyone knows who A420 is, and if they don't they should utilize our search feature.

I'll save myself the time and not do that. I don't care who he is or what your angle is.

As with a lot of things stereotyping carries with it the responsibility of not letting it become a slippery slope to prejudice or discrimination.

Yeah, Americans are seen as being incredibly fat and the sole reason we need large cars/bigger airplane seats. We also are known for putting plasticy cheese on everything, and sugar is 1/2 of the content of all of our foods. We're also known to be loud, obnoxious, rude, and completely unaware of other cultures.

To be fair, the USA is HUGE- it's bigger than the entire continent of Europe! Therefore we're a closed society. We have different cultures (mid-west, southern, California, Texas...etc), but we all speak English and follow the same system of government. Most everywhere else that much land would be broken into a dozen different systems and cultures. The loud and rude thing is probably just a select few tourists that ruined it for everyone else. I'm picturing the 60 year old husband and wife wearing sun hats, Hawaiian shirts, and a camera around the husband's neck getting angry nobody in France speaks English and calling everyone "Boy!"

As for the fat thing- we lead the charge in cheap food, and the rest of the world is catching up. Obesity is spiking in Europe, and they will soon join the "I'm too fat to drive a Puegot" club 🙂

As for these, I've never heard of them being associated with Americans:
*Ugly (might have to do with the fat stereotype, but coastal cities have hot women!)

*All their women are hookers (ugly hookers?)

*Jealous of Canadians (EL -OH -EL! It's the other way around 😀)

*Have highest percentage of gay men in the world (I suspect there are equal #'s of gays everywhere, we just don't kill them if they come out)

*Compost heap of all the trash kicked out of Europe centuries ago (maybe they're thinking of Australians?)

*Men wear panties (<--- WTF?)

Good point. On another note, I copied your ratings and highlighted the ones that I had different feelings on. I left the others alone and only highlighted the ones that really stood out and gave them my own rating for your comparison. I put my rating next to yours in red.

7) *An embarrassment to their country
10) *Obese
9) *Ugly
9) *Love drugs
10) *All their women are hookers
4) *Obsessed with everything red, white and gay

2) *Stink like butter
3) *Pays an Arab every time they go to the gas station
7) *Have highest percentage of gay men in the world
1) *Hysterically unaware of everything around them (5) sad but true
2) *Determined to destroy the environment (5) pressure building here
4) *Loud
1) *emotional
5) *Reserve their leadership for movie stars and inexperienced college kids
1) *Compost heap of all the trash kicked out of Europe centuries ago
2) *Men wear panties

Examples of peoples, groups or ideas for which there is a social Stigma:

Crap, its true. Americans smell like butter. Also, if you eat healthy foods, you won't need to apply toxic deodorant to your body every day.

From naturalnews.com

And above all, if you want to eliminate body odor for life, avoid cheese, milk and dairy products. They make you smell like "milk and butter." The smell of these products is so bad that when U.S. soldiers were shipped off to Vietnam in the 1960's, the Vietcong could actually smell them thanks to their American diets. New arrivals were often put on new diets based on local cuisine simply to rid their bodies of the milk-and-butter smell, thereby reducing the risk of being literally sniffed out by the enemy.

Here is my take on some of the items. Many of them are subjective such as beatiful or ugly.

Obese? - about 30% of US folks are, and climbing. Obese will be the majority if we keep the same path.
Hookers? - there are some very loose and easy women running around but no hookers roaming the streets of US.
Women are short/fat/ugly? - short? no way.
Unaware? - sad but true. Too many of US folks are ignorant besides what are around them day to day.
Destroy the environment? - not on purpose but because of the lifestyle.
Panties? - not that I know of, at least the majority of the normal folks.

What kind of butter do we smell like? If its normal Paula Dean butter, then bleh. But if its some of that wonderful Kerrygold.... mmmmmmm...
