was thinking about this the other day for some reason

i think the evolution of the "social networking" sites went like this

ClassMates > Friendster > Myspace > Facebook

with each website doing it much better than the last

I wonder what's next? Or are we going to constantly have spinoff-type sites like Twitter and blogspot

You left out a lot of important phases, including international influences like Orkut.

I still don't have a MySpace or Facebook account. Anandtech sucks up way more time than I even want to be online lol.

my point being that you can do either as part of facebook, where those sites go deeper into a particular fad like "status" updates or blogging

You forgot Xanga, too... it seems to be popular with Christian conservatives for some reason (shrug).

Well JJ.am, Stickam, Hi5 happened in the series of events as well.

Blogging was around before social networking sites got big, so I don't know how you can call blogspot a "spin off".

Plus you failed to draw any real conclusions, so I don't know what is to say really.

I guess if you are asking what is next you can look at the "niche"-network fad that has already begun and the stabilization of social networking platforms.

Well, even blogging has evolved to different sites as I've gone through high school / college.

Beginning of high school - LiveJournal
Middle of high school - Xanga
Douchebag "Activities Director" getting into everyone's personal business - End of Xanga
College - Facebook notes

Of course, blogspot has been around forever and wordpress is used in many places now. It just depends what you enjoy working with and how much control you want to have in the design and feel.

I remember back in the early 90's my wife thought I was an uber geek/nerd for posting things on a bulletin board, and then actually using CHAT to type a coversation to someone. Now you're considered an idiot if you don't know how to communicate like this :p

I'm always 10 years ahead of the curve.

Facebook will be the winner for a while, and didn't you miss Xanga? i was thinking it would be Classmantes > Friendster > Xanga > live spaces > MySpace > Facebook > twitter

Yeah... Myspace still has some of the worst designed custom pages I've ever seen, though. Hell, I've seen Geocities pages back in 1997 filled with <BLINK> tags and animated .GIF's that still look better than those customized Myspace pages.
