If the GOP purged itself of social conservatives I might join them.

I find the phrase "social conservative" oxymoronic, even if it is accurate.

To me, you cannot be truly conservative and, yet, think the government's proper role is to oppose gay marriage, adoption, and support workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, impose "decency rules" via the FCC, funnel public money to private religious organizations, and force public schools to teach creationism or intelligent design in science classes... to name a few.

The "culture war" is not where the government has a role. Even if, by some wild stroke of one's imagination, the federal government did have a role in fighting in the culture war, it should be plainly obvious that.. just as in economic and fiscal matters.. it is woefully incompetent at best and disastrous at worst.

Free people don't need the government in their wallets or in their bedrooms.

The GOP needs to get rid of these idiots, Kick them out of the country, just get rid of them because there is nothing conservative about them and because of their views they can be very tyrannical since they want the government to ban gay marriage which is a violation of their liberty

A government can't run without money. Bad people need their sexual depravity supervised and governed.

A free and responsible people demand responsible government in both areas. The issue is, what does responsible mean in each sphere.

I think social conservatives need their own party.
They should just take the Tea Party and run their own candidates.
Rick Santorum would get a lot of votes if he ran on the Tea Party line.

+1

Unfortunately I think that the death of social conservatism in the US is being vastly over-hyped. There are a few issues (gay marriage being the prime example) where the fundies are clearly on the losing side of history, but on the whole I believe we're delusional if we think they're dying off.

Indeed. I'm a fiscal conservative, but strongly believe in personal freedoms.
Nice. So when has the Republican Party been the party of fiscal conservatives? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Back when the GOP was a little smarter and more realistic on social issues, they got the religious right aboard, by promising them to run a set of fine upstanding christian men and women who personally against abortion, gay marriage, and any kinds of anti-American social changes in legislation. But since distasteful legislation violates personal American freedoms, the GOP social conservative didn't want use legislation they knew they would be out voted on, and instead promised to pack our nations courts and let un-elected appointed GOP judges to do the job for them. And if the GOP could just get a real solid fifth SCOTUS justice to join Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito, SCOTUS could get the Federal Government out of the Social legislation business. And then the GOP win the Social Legislation battle on a State by State basis. With victory number one being a repeal of Roe v Wade. Things like Civil rights legislation could follow next and the happy prosperity of the 1950's would follow next.

Of course GWB and his general stupidity screwed that pooch while the horrified but expectant religious right looked on in confused inaction. And when GWB collapsed the American and World economy, the pack the courts plan was dead for the foreseeable future.

Someone had to represent the religious right and take their case to the American people in the form of directly legislating the issues. Which is why certain GOP backers invented the T party, so they could say the things responsible GOP legislators couldn't so easily say without being labeled nuts. But the T party once invented no longer obeyed their inventors.

And now the GOP is in disarray. No longer will mere promises to pack the courts keep the far right on board, silent and complacent. Nor did Mitt Romney promises to fix the economy on blind faith alone convince enough people to win in 11/2013.

As we have a new paradigm of grid lock to assure American government paralysis. keeping America mired in the 20'th century forever while the rest of the world changes and adapts to new opportunities and realities.

As America will then stagger along dumb fat and happy, until the day comes when the rest of the world quits lending us money.

Tell me when have I ever advocated for gay marriage to be banned or called for their deaths

You demanded that a Hindu be forced to swear in on the bible... That isn't socially conservative in the most ridiculous sense?

Because what happens when someone else wants to swear in on their book, it wouldn't be good

The US is a Christian country so the Bible should be used or the Constitution but nothing else. I still dont have anything against gay people though so I am not a social conservative
