Anyway, offsides are one of the most retarded football rules, its just completely pointless... If a team managed to get into that kind of situation, why deny them the goal?

Im guessing this rule was set in place so that you dont have a player constantly camping the opposite team for an easy goal, but I can think of better ways this could be done

It compresses the field; same reason they do it for hockey. If there was no offsides rule you would have forwards staying up the field to receive long passes from the defense/midfield. The offsides rule forces midfield play which is more interesting and fun.

lolirony?

Without the offside rule, the game would turn into a mess of cherry-picking and dumping long balls. I much prefer a possession game that actually takes skill.

His stupid teammates should have warned him that the enemy was standing right behind him.

This was going to my first comment, too.

Also, though I rarely watch soccer, I have seen this happen often enough that all goalies should always check behind them before putting the ball down like that.

Plenty of blame to go around.

That being said, given the extreme value of goals in soccer, since they are so rare, this type of thing should not be allowed, IMO.

Better yet, goalie check surroundings first?

Not exactly true, if the offensive player sends a pass and it's deflected by the defense, it can still be offside. Intent is what matters.

It would be offside at the point of the pass, BEFORE the defense touched it, not after.

I used to be a linesman for youth soccer as well as having played it as a centre midfielder, centre back, and goalie so I am well acquainted with the offside rule. As a goalie I have had occasion to step up and play the offside trap to get a call, and as a linesman I have made the call where there was one defender behind the attacker but the goalie wasn't. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Yep, been playing soccer for 35 years. Just never heard it taught like that- maybe the rules have changed? I know a lot of the rules have been modified since I was up on all the "official" rules.

Eh, it's semantics. Yes, the pass is the event that is called, but the point was that offside can't be nullified by a defender's deflection or similar.
