sounds like you never played either football, or american football. defenders are allowed to go for the ball, and trust me, it isn't always clean just because the ref didn't see it. people complain about no goals being scored, you think it's easy to hit that net from 90 feet out? pfft..
how bout american football? the goal is the entire width of the field, now that's pathetic!
Really, truly, there is no sporting atmosphere like a European football (soccer) game - and I've watched a lot of sports.
There are drums in the crowd, trumpets, flares and fireworks, 50 foot flags... people care y'know? If you think Americans care about baseball, and Australians about rugby, they don't. Not really. Football fans really *really* care, and that's what makes the singing different.

I say FootBall you can't beat the excitement of seeing someone's lights goin out for a couple of seconds after a nice little tackle fercking wide receivers they should be called suicide receivers. Soccer is nice too, definitely more fun to play.

i grew up knowing absolutely nothing about american football and all around me it's all about soccer, all the time. but i couldn't stand watching it and never understood how people like it so much. i tried hard so many times because most of my friends are crazy about it. lots and lots of staying up late night with my college buddies to watch a game (live night game + time difference) but it always ended up with me practically falling asleep before even half time. it's a total bore for me but i kept trying mostly just to hang out. on the inside i actually have given up, there is no way i could enjoy watching this sport.
so i finished college and came here to the US for grad school, watched american football for the very first time (it was a college game on TV if i remember correctly) with a friend next to me explaining how the game plays (i had zero idea at the time), and i got totally hooked ever since (~6 years ago or so).
i always compare these two games in the analogy of computer games. i've always been a fan of turn-based strategy/RP games but can't stand RTS or FPS. i think this is kind of like that. soccer = real time (you develop your strategy as you go along while the clock is ticking). football = turn-based (although there is a general 'overall' strategy everything is technically offense vs. defense on a per-play basis). the latter is just much more entertaining for me.

I like American Football more. I played soccer for a few years and liked it, but once I got into Lacrosse, soccer fell to the wayside.
They are pushing MLS in America really hard on TV, but it's not catching. Which is surprising considering how many kids are playing soccer at a young age. Soccer on TV is horribly dull, I can't really get into watching a sport where a LOT of contests will end up 0-0. Yes I know there are high scoring games, but really, thoes are minimal.
I think that soccer is so popular across the world because it's an incredibly simple sport to get involved in. You don't need a tremendous amount of equipment to play and it's really not that expensive to pick up. I look at third world nations in South America and think about children playing soccer on the streets with little more than a ball and a make-shift "goal". You can also play in just about any sort of weather, short of mabey snow, which I'm sure is totally playable too (I've done it). All of the factors involved in the sport make it the logical choice for it being the "world game". I think it boils down to money and ease of ability to participate at all levels.
With ANY sport it takes an amazing amount of athleticism to play at a professional level. All sports have their finer points that the true fans really enjoy. Comparing two sports and saying which one is "better" is silly. All of you actually arguing over which is better might as well whip out your little weenies and just measure them. Anyone who really enjoys sports should be able to appreciate any game out there, even if they don't totally dig on it.
As for soccer, if the euros are so damn sophisticated why are there so many riots and deaths associated with soccer games? Ya know we gun loving, violence embracing, ignorant, egotistical Americans don't riot and have body counts at football games! 😀
Anyway, everyone knows Hockey is the best.
