Cutthroat, SOB stands for Seventeen or Bust, a mathematical project aimed at tackling the Seirpenski Problem using distributed computing.
The Sierpinski problem itself deals with numbers of the form N = k * 2^n + 1, for any odd k and n > 1. Numbers of this form are called Proth numbers. If, for some specific value of k, every possible choice of n results in a composite (non-prime) Proth number N, then that k is called a Sierpinski number. The Sierpinski problem itself is: "What is the smallest Sierpinski number?"

Yea I'd like to know too .Originally posted by: Cutthroat
So what is the scientific benefit of knowing these prime numbers? What can be done if they find all 17?

As Raymond's father would say, Holy Crap! :Q
Just don't make too much noise, or we will awaken the cows, and they can throw a LOT of cowpower on a project......

Can I run multiple instances of SoB?

Hmm. It does appear that you can run multiple instances of this.
I just threw this on my machine. I'm completely baffled as to what all these numbers and stats mean, especially "equivalent power". Ironically, their homepage has a section for FAQs, one of which is supposedly hosted here at AT (link's dead).
