dammit. Woke up to see that my mod'ded 5500 with the retail celeron fans had died. Damn fans weren't working, and the 5500 was cooked.

massive graphics corruption, tried plugging the fans back in and giving the 5500 time to cool down, but no dice. It's cooked.

<sigh> this sucks....

Did you try putting the original fans back on it? Let it cool off awhile 1, or 2 hrs. Then try it again.

How the he!! are you:D(and yes, that does need an answer seperate from the V5 issue;))

Errr, outside of your unforunate experience?:(

You going to replace it with another 5500 or did you pick up that Ultra you were thinking about? If you decide to go with a GF2/Radeon, make sure to pick up Giants if you haven't already:)

Glad to see you posting, you in the far east yet?

I let the 5500 sit for quite some time, and it was still fuxored. It's dead.

I KILLED IT!!!

<sob>

When is an HONEST time of release for the NV20? I have a 3500 in the system right now, and I'm in pain. I got spoiled by that 5500.

Trying to find another 5500 is pretty difficult. They're no cheaper now than they were, just far more scarce.

As far as me? I'm fine. I replied to the Giants thread, naturally. <G>

Looking to replace it with another 5500 probably. I've been playing NFS far too much to give up the FSAA. Can't do it.

"Oh, SGT Beare, your orders are delayed until June. You'll go to Fort Huachuca for 4 months, then on to Korea after that"

So for the time being I'm back.

oh, IBM'er, I noticed that you are looking to "give your 5500 away at a LAN"

PLEASE DON'T DO THAT!!

Sell it to me. Mine is dead, and NFS Porsche REQUIRES the 5500's FSAA. PLEASEPLESAEPLEASEPLEASE....

just got a new house, and the $$$ are tight...go ahead and sell it to me....

<drops to knees>

c'mon, don't make me grovel, that's conduct unbecoming an NCO...

I think I heard that the NV20 is going to be debuted on Feb 27 and coming to stores shortly thereafter. Can I have your V5 5500? I'll pay for shipping.

Edit: Is it still under warranty? If it is I'm sure you can get a replacement one.

I think I heard something about supporting the products until 2002, but that could just be driver support. Why don't you send them an email asking if you can get a replacement. Here is the link to their support contact page. Just put the original fans back on it.

If they won't replace the card can I have it?

any particular reason you want it?

If I don't have to send it in, and you pay shipping, I'm game.

Sorry to hear of your loss Robotech :( I have one of my V5s Blorbs on a monitored header with shutdown prog on. I just hope the one that the header dosent report keeps spinning. That would be par for course to have the wrong one go sour. How I found a board with three headers and only two report I dont know.:(

BTW ...Was this after a new mod to the card,or were you doing something else and unplugged the fans? The reason I ask is I had some frightening times with my V5 mod. After working on it, Blobs and chipheatsinks with artic silver epoxy on all I must have got a drop of the glue or a smudge somewhere I wasnt supposed to. Vid was totaly fubar,at first it wouldnt work at all.

First try was nothing (rapid breathing intense feeling of fear)I pulled it out and couldnt see anything wrong. Just the same I gave it a real good cleaning acetone and alcohol. I pluged it back in it worked and was all messed up I could barely make anything out in windose. Long story somewhat shortend,after 3 more clean/try and prays it worked and perfectly. Now happy @190 was higher but I bumped up my FSB and had to back it down.

I really think the problem was I got something on the edge of one of the memory chips causing a short.

No, there's no particular reason I want it. It will give me another thing to do maybe trying different things to get it to work.:) I just got a pioneer 113(6x/32x) dvd rom drive from somebody who said it wouldn't read cd's, or dvd's and I'm trying to see if maybe I can get it to work.

edit: LMK if you don't have to send it in.

RoboTech,

I feel your pain.

Did the same thing.

<holding down the vomit>

Twice.

<now spewing uncontrolled>

I was forced to go to the other side.

Creative Annihilator2 Ultra is now my master.

Hi there RoboTECH! :)
I see you are now well versed with the joys of overclocking. ;)

Did you try underclocking the card to some ridiculously low speed (say 100 MHz)?

OMG...

I really wish you would have e-mailed me sooner. The lan party was this weekend and I gave it away as a prize. It was a big event with 300 people.

BFG - it wasnt' overclocking that killed the thing.

actually, at the time it died, it wasn't overclocked at all. Even my CPU was running @ stock speed (first time in forever)

The fans just died. Would've been hosed regardless.

IBM'er - <sob> okay.....hope you had a fun LAN party <pitiful crying>

Tates - ACMicro's scores on Resellerratings

thanks, but ick.....

Well, here in the UK they've gone down to 99.99 in major retail stores, from 199.99, so that's 50% off.

I just assumed it would be the same over there, but I guess not?

If you were really really without scruples you could......
Send someone to a local Best Buy and have them purchase the card for cash(179$here)and return it,saying something like I have an Intel board and it wont fit in the slot. Then the next day take advantage of their open box markdown policy(159$approx). That would be reserved for the most unscrupuless of persons in a state of sheer desperation. Oh and if your really lucky you know a less than honest employee who can purchase that same open box with their discount even cheaper still.

Disclaimer: These are not the current purchasing methodes of the author nor does the author condone such activitys. It is mearly meant as a hypothetical possibility of how one could beat the system and big business for a few bucks.;)
