Soap Effect

Don't understand how people could watch with this on. Was going through BB yesterday and they had a big curved set in the TV lounge area positioned so that the back of the couch was facing out so walking by you'd see the screen. It was playing that San andreas movie and all the motion seemed distracting watching with that effect enabled.
 
Yep. Horrid. Although, some games may look cool with it. My LG TV supposedly has it but I find no option to turn it on or off. My GFs samsung tvs have this and its whack.
 
Yeah i dont even know why they bother with that tech. I dont know a single person who likes it. Just let it die already and move on manufacturers.
 
I don't understand the hate. If you don't like it, turn it off. Who says you have to keep it on?

"Soap effect" is GREAT for sports. I turn it on to watch boxing, tennis, etc.. it actually helps to keep motion blur in check and makes whatever live sport I'm watching more lifelike.

Turn it off for movies and shows. Simple as that. Or better yet, switch to "Clear" so you get an even better image in movies without excessive motion blur, yet without the "soap opera" fluid motion effect.

Some of you act as if you're chained to 240hz motion interpolation. lol.

1) Half the people don't even know that this is a thing and just spend their entire lives watching with a suboptimal setting
2) The other half that do know it's a thing shouldn't have to dig into their TV settings every time they want to change from a TV show to sports.

It could be done so much better.

My Samsung JS9000 has a sports mode and I adjusted a few things there so that when I put sports on I just pop that mode on from the menu. Many TVs allow you to have multiple settings in memory. Just have a movie mode and a standard mode and swap between them. I swap between movie, game, and sports on my TV. Game mode reduces the input lag on my TV from over 100ms to around 23ms.

As for motion interpolation if makes movies that were shot on film look unnatural to me when it's turned on too high. I normally have it set to clear as TestKing stated. This gives lower amounts of judder (my TV doesn't always do a proper 3:2 pulldown when playing a 24fps movie on a 60hz source) but does not give the soap opera effect. The soap opera effect occurs when it's set on standard or smooth. There is also a custom setting that I don't have patience for so I don't bother. All of this is of course off on game mode.

It may depend on the model but I've seen some Plasmas with bad ghosting(not related to judder or blur). My Pioneer didn't have any problems when it worked, it just decided to die one day and I didn't feel like trying to repair it out of warranty.
 
I just prefer to leave it off. It's WAY too distracting. I watched a full movie with it on once and wanted to tear my eyes out while my family just didn't notice.
 
I don't even know why you people are complaining about this and 3D at this point. For one, you can turn it off if you don't want it so its not like you have to use it. And they actually have started to improve things by actually working to make it more integral to the content, so that 3D and high framerate stuff is improving.

And for the people having an actual discussion instead of "OMG I had to walk by some TVs in a store and they looked so bad!", doesn't it also help with games as well (depending on how they do it, but like black frame insertion, doesn't that help visual perception when playing games; the normal interpolation which adds processing and thus lag isn't typically good for games though)?

It does help with games but you get higher input lag as a result of the extra processing which can be worse than a bit of blur for many titles.
 
I think it's good for games provided the game is locked to 60 fps. At 60fps, the interpolation makes it look like 120fps. The same is true for 30fps (and 24fps for 3D) but the input lag is pretty significant. At 60 fps, input lag is minimal.

However, if the framerate is not locked to 60fps, and varies between 30 and 60, the interpolation is not desirable because it introduces stuttering/jittery/jumpiness. Don;t think it has to to do with the framerates itself, but the variations. If somehow framerate could be locked at 45fps I'm sure it would be smooth without any jitteryness.

My plasma (ST50) has a smooth motion feature. Its kinda neat in small doses. I played around with it when I first got the tv. It makes some content look more...lively. For other content it looks too artificial. I think in some cases it caused some skipping or something so I turned it off.
 
I don't recall if my oldest has it, newer ones do though but it is off by default I recall. Newer (and all LED/LCD) ones seem to have it on more often than not for some reason.

It's on by default when set to the demo mode at the store. Samsung TVs have a setting for usage with two options, Store or Home. When you set it to store it has a set of default settings and when you change them, it will revert back after around 30minutes. When you set it on Home mode it doesn't revert settings.

I'm SO glad that I picked up a new Plasma TV before they were completely gone! I'll take IPS for my monitor and Plasma for my TV, thank you.

FWIW: I totally get how somethings are very noticeable to some people, and yet negligible to others. It just goes to show that while we are basically all the same, we are VERY different.
 
My non-techie friends don't even know what I'm talking about when I point it out on their LCDs, don't get it at all. I'm seriously looking for a used Panasonic ST60/VT60/ZT60, the price is just not good though...
 
Coming from a photographer who only went digital 10 years ago.....

I just found this thread and want to say that the FILM effect is one reason I'm still watching my DLP-TV....every 3 years it gets a new bulb and as long as that works I'm in heaven.
 
It's pushed so heavily because otherwise average joe wouldn't know what on earth he needed a 120hz panel for.

False. Interpolation exists to hide problems in the source material.

24fps is a pretty low framerate. When dealing with fast action or panning there will be judder at 24fps. Most of our lives 3:2 pulldown hid this judder.

With 120hz tvs we could finally watch movies at 24fps as intended but when we did we encountered judder (made worse by LCD's poor motion resolution). TV makers expected to be blamed for this judder (even though the problem is the source) so they created interpolation to stick back in artificially the missing frames that causes judder. As a side effect we got the soap opera look because it interpolates 24fps to 30fps (aka the framerate soap operas use).
 
With tennis players throwing games, juicing in baseball, lifelong injuries from playing football, and corruption in soccer, who would watch/support sports anymore?
