I'm watching Top Gear videos on youtube. This one in particular seemed oddly familiar.

I remember a while back we had a thread about pulling camping trailers with a small truck (or I derailed a thread by saying something about this). AT Garage immediately responds by saying such a feat is absolutely impossible, there's no way god would allow such a thing to happen, and having anything less than 10 cylinders in a towing vehicle is blasphemy. Here in the UK, we pray to a different god, and that god does allow such things to happen. The guys on Top Gear managed to get 3 fully grown adults in a car with a 1.5L engine and pull a respectable size camping trailer up hills. Did the engine fuck up? No. Did the transmission melt? No. Is it possible to pull a camping trailer with a piece of shit car? Absolutely.
You'll notice that while going up the hill, they're stuck going 30mph at full throttle. That vehicle truly is pushed as hard as it can go, and it's not fucking up.

Absolute video proof that my failed transmission is because Toyota vehicles are designed by retards. That Kia has even less power capability than my Corolla and its transmission managed to not melt.

Yes, it can't pull the load, like everyone said. We are glad you finally see that and have admitted it, with video.

Smoking is not bad for a person because i've never seen one die after a smoke? Or doing crack is not bad because most people don't die after their first try?

Did your car's transmission melt immediately during or after towing something?

Can you link to the thread you're bitching about?

You can tow with a small transmission safely, if you have a manual transmission, if you know what you're doing..

I've towed 'stupid' amounts with my 2.5l 5 speed ranger, the biggest issue was the brakes. It's not dangerous, you just have to really be aware of what's going on around you and you have to know how to use a clutch when towing (not slipping clutch etc)

Now, another issue is that (corollas specifically) small car unibodies are not made for lateral loads... things like going downhill and braking induce much much more stress than the trunk assembly etc were designed to take.

Also, your insurance company is going to be less than pleased if there's an accident while you're towing more than the GVWR

No telling what you have done to your Corolla in the past and with towing even a camper like that you need to think in real world terms and get a life... WTF do you think trucks are really for...? Also thats why they call it a "passenger car" (people not damn boxes on wheels)...

I said towing had little to do with engine power and more to do with stopping power. I then post pictures of 1980s pickup trucks hauling extremely large fifth wheel trailers. Back in the 1980s, vehicles had ridiculously low power and they still worked. Lots of GM vehicles were 5L engines and they still only had 150HP.

Now, another issue is that (corollas specifically) small car unibodies are not made for lateral loads... things like going downhill and braking induce much much more stress than the trunk assembly etc were designed to take.
Small cars have surprisingly good weight ratings. A north american Corolla is rated for 1500lbs towing and GVWR is 1000 over curb weight. The engine will give out before the body does ;)

Also, your insurance company is going to be less than pleased if there's an accident while you're towing more than the GVWR
GVWR and towing capacity are unrelated. In the paragraph above, I just said towing rating for a Corolla is 50% higher than the GVWR limit for stuff inside the car. With 3 people in the car and 1 trailer behind the car, the Top Gear guys are perfectly within spec

In general, UK cars are rated significantly higher than American cars. Example, what do you think the towing capacity is for a Honda Accord with a 2.4L gasoline engine? In the UK, it's rated to tow 1600kg. That's about 3500 pounds. Yes, in Britain you are allowed to pull a 3500 pound trailer with a regular 2.4L gasoline Honda Accord.

Only because Toyota of North America is run by retards. Look how strong a Honda Civic with a 1.4L gasoline engine is built in UK. link
Towing capacity = 1200kg. That's 2600 pounds it can safely pull. Are UK cars just that much better than North American cars? In NA, we absolutely expect the thing to melt when pulling that much. Honda UK says "go for it, we'll cover it under warranty if it fucks up"

Can you tow it? Yes.

Is it a good idea? No.

Nobody regularly tows 2600lbs with a Civic. If you are, you're an idiot.

Oh, and those pics you linked to trucks of the 1980s were not the light duty gas versions of those trucks. Those were heavy duty trucks likely with diesel engines and 10,000+ towing capacity. Do you have any idea what a 5th wheel trailer weighs loaded? Do you know why you should not max out the towing capability or hauling capability of your vehicle? Here, I'll tell you: because it's not safe.

Retarded thread is retarded...

OP, has the dealershop come back to you yet and say that the transmission failure was due to user error?

Are you remembering to factor in tongue weight? That does count towards GVWR.
That's a fair point. Given they shouldn't be pulling more than ~3500 or so, their trailer is most likely similar to the lightest one on this list here. For a ~3700lb trailer, the tongue is 290lbs. So basically that means leave the girlfriend at home so the car stays under GVWR :D

Let's look it up together. 6500 pounds for the trailer.

Ford Ranger
"Regular Cab, Super Cab, Double Cab 4x4: Unbraked 750 kg*; Braked 3000 kg*"

3000kg is 6613 pounds. As long as your plastic cups and nylon underwear weigh less than 100 pounds, you're good to go
