Well not just happened, but around 10am this morning it did...

I was driving on a 2 lane highway and was in the right lane and went to pass this guy. As I went to pass him I saw something in the road on the white dotted lines between the lanes, like a 8" or so stick of some sort that I nailed and heard it flip up and hit the bottom of my car.

Shortly after I started smelling gas, like heavy gas smells but I was behind this old ragedy van so thought it was that van. Then when I turned off to my exit I wasn't behind him anymore and I noticed the smell was a little fainter, although I could still smell it, so thought nothing of it. I was also watching gas gauge to see if it was going down, and nope, it was fine.

As I took the exit I noticed this pickup truck right behind me, that had been behind me since I left the mall like 5 minutes before I hit the thing in the road. He kept following me for like 1/4 mile into the parking lot at my work and then he honked his horn trying to get my attention, so I waved him next to me. He then told me that I was leaking gas from below my car, like gushing out, so I said thanks for letting me know and drove to the parking lot across the street so I could be away from other cars.

When I got out of my car, I took a quick look, and that shit was just gushing out. It was coming out as fast as like if you turned over a gallon of milk and just squeezed it. I had like 1/2 a tank of gas too.

So that shit punctured my gas tank. And I have a metal gas tank too. That was so fucking random. Had I changed lanes like a split second before or after, I never would have hit that thing, and I wouldn't be typing this. Now I gotta pay $500 deductible and had one hell of a hassle to handle this morning, getting my car towed and getting a rental car.

That blows. I'm assuming you were driving on the Crackhead Express, AKA 295/Baltimore-Washington Expressway?
LOL wow you guessed it. And I was on there for literally less than 2 miles. I hate that fucking road. I went from Arundel Mills to 32.

Best way to handle that situation is grab a match, put on sunglasses and toss the match into growing puddle.
Walk away from the explosion like a boss

A lot of cars have undercarriage shields / panels now. Is the gas tank not shielded by them?

I guess not, unless it went through the shield too but didn't look like any was there. I saw the hole after it was done leaking and it looked like there was no shield. It's a 2008 Infiniti G37S.

I should have taken a video of it leaking or pics of the hole, didn't even think of it at the time.

It aint that bad compared to the i95 where it goes by the phillies stadium. We were going to new york and got off there to grab a bite wow even at 6 am and there were hookers and pimps all over the place.

Did any of them bounce up and puncture your gas tank??

Hooray for plastic tanks.
.

Once upon a time, I ran over a brick on the highway
.
It severed a tire belt.

So I replaced the tire.

replacing the gas tank is likely cheaper than that $500 deductible depending on what you drive and if you are able to do it yourself.

Yeah they said they will let me know. However I am unsure if the towing and rental car costs go towards the deductible or if that is something they cover outside of it.

I drive a 2008 G37S FWIW. And I wouldn't install it myself regardless.
