So would you choose old but cool or new and fast?

It's a hard call. I like both. Most only get a chance to be in 'old cars' when they are just that ...old and beat.

I had a 1966 Mustang GT. It was better than it rolled off the factory floor. I had taken every nut, bolt and fastener out and even finished them. Car was much more solid than some of my friend's Mustangs. I always used to cringe when someone said they had a nice one too as it would alway them get "well it's nice for a 30 year old car"...

Newer gives you alot of gadgets, sometimes too many for my taste.

I had an '86 GT Convertible and a '94 GT Coupe. I loved both of those cars but the '94 was sooo much better in every way. Better brakes, better chassis, better handling. I modded it a bit, drove it for 4 years, and put almost 70,000 miles on it before I sold it.

Brakes can be an easy upgrade, but not too inexpensive. Suspension, all you can do is good shocks, sway bar and end links and be sure the springs and rubber parts are in good order. Same for steering linkage, ball joints and tie rod ends.

Sometimes, the look and other characteristics of an old car, make it very desirable.
Like a Packard or an older model Rolls, the looks of a Jaguar "E Type"

I love that new ZR1...

I do however love old cars though.

It's been said in this thread already.... Old body/modern powertrain/comforts would own all.

If I had the $ to build an old muscle car, it would for sure have a modern core. I don't care what it'd be worth, I want driveability!

As much as I like new cars I think it'd be badass to own a nice older car, something ala a DB5 or 300SL. I'd also be happy with a cobra or a corvette stingray.

I found out from my grandma that my grandpa offered to buy her a e type like this.

She said she didn't want it because it's nose was too long lol, I wish she had gotten that car.

We have her 1970 280 SL that was recently fully restored in storage... My dad is trying to sell it 🙁 I remember her taking me for rides with the top off when I was little.

Kinda bass ackward though the way you have it listed IMO. You have a modern day "supercar" versus old cars in a time before supercars were even around. And obviously modern cars are going to be where it's at for a daily driver for 99% of people, especially if you live in the snowbelt.

You'd need to compare with more evenly balanced cars.
Like would rather have a new 2010 Mustang or a 1969 Mustang?

If it's my daily driver, I'd take a new car any day. Power locks, power windows, air conditioning, better fuel economy, better seats, better safety, more gadgets, etc. All things that can be retrofitted into a classic, sure, but by the time you're done you'd might as well have bought the modern car anyway.

If I have another car to drive daily and just want something to play around in, I'd take a classic in a heartbeat. They might not be as fast or as stable, but there's something raw and naughty about a classic that you just can't reproduce on any modern car. I've seen a number of bikes, ricers, and modern muscle cars getting pulled over for going wide open in earshot of a cop, but the guys in classics just seem to get a nod.

Now that I own a car with insane braking ability, I'd never want to go back to non-ABS brakes. Panic stopping with old drum brakes were never fun but I still love the simplicity of older cars which is why I'll still probably own another one later in life.

Lol. OP we must have very similar taste. I'd like to buy a new car in the next year to replace my dumpy little DD. I've been going the rounds trying to decide between a C6 or a kit Cobra. I think I'm leaning towards the C6 as A/C and all the modern comforts might be too hard to live without in a DD.

That being said though, old muscle cars definitely have a presence that the newer stuff doesn't. The roar of a V8 through sidepipes is sweet music.

Yeah the pro-touring style that was popular in the 90's was a good compromise. Updated suspension, engine, & drive train in an old car. If I lived somewhere without snow I wouldn't hesitate to have one as a daily driver, money/time permitting.
