Lately I've been more and more annoyed at the "quality" of posts regarding finance and credit markets... it seems that many, many people are talking out of their respective asses.

(This is outside the usual trolls here... you know who you are)

So what's everyone background?

Do you feel like people are over exaggerating the current state of the US financial system or understating?
Either way we all know it's not the end of the US economy and with all these bailouts I am quite content with people calling for the end of the world and hopefully people take this as a wake up call and show some restraint and personal responsibility.
That's the only good thing about extremists, it allows for people to take a more moderate position.

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.

I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty- Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.

I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully
negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me.

I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prize winning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan,
cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

(I think WombatWoman originally wrote this, although it usually shows up on the net as a "college admissions essay")

I personally think we have some serious challenges. I also think that the solution isn't simple and we have a responsibility to fix the problem.

What does fixing it mean? Dealing with the current crisis by letting the system work the kinks out, which takes time and liquidity.

Followed by increased regulatory oversight for capital requirements.

If we don't responsibly and logically fix the problem we do face the prospect of having the system topple with dire consequences for more than just the US.

I was smart enough to not buy a house at the peak of the market with a 40 year no-doc ARM with an interest-only period and next to no money down.

Indeed. However, many spoke out against it and were still overruled.

Yeah, since credentials don't matter, let's just let kindergarten kids run the world and see how it goes.

MS Engineering, MBA, CFA candidate, Financial ERP consultant here. At least I am neutral as far as the Wall St. BS goes and have the background to make independent, informed judgment.

I listen to many, trust few. I've found the wealthiest people I know (not the ones driving the fancy cars, living in the big house, making the big bucks each year, and spouting market stuff daily) are simple people, who make reasonably safe market investments and take more risk with their time (starting a business on the side, support their significant other with starting a business, etc).

Sure I read the journal, several "money" magazines, and listen to lots of people's market advice...but I never make brash moves because of it. To think that I'd take anything off this website and actually make a decision with my money based on it would be asinine.

my credentials?

Smart enough to wait to buy a house until now...with a 30yr fixed @5.875% with 12% down, $3000 in seller concessions, one year home warranty, and $34,000 off the list price.

But I digress. I took one (health care) economics class in college and have a bachelor's in nursing.

And smart enough to think I was smart by diversifying my retirement portfolio with low, medium and high risk investments and still I lost 3.6% so far this year. But on the flip side I'm only 23, so I've got some time to make it back up.
