Most come with software, but it's pretty basic and doesn't allow you to do anything extensive... but most allow you to do some editing as well as titles and chapters...

Umm, my Lite-on set top burner lets me create chapters and menus (even during realtime recording).

Sure, STB DVD recorders you can add chapters and titles, split videos, & mark out commercials. On rewritable media, you can do it after the fact. On write once media, you will need to set the chapter points and add the title when you make the recording. As for menus, each STB has it's own menu design. So if you don't like the default one, you will need to edit the disk on a PC.

Really wow it can edit out commercials too! I will be using it to transfer my MiniDV tapes to DVD I want a fast easy simple way and a STB sounds like it. Since I'm still using my old ass computer, it is too slow.

Note, you can't free up the space though. You mark the beginning and end of commercials and then hide that track.

And yeah, STB DVD Recorder is the easiest way to transfer tapes to DVD media. And DVD recorders with HDs are less than $500 now. So you can save everything to HD first and then edit the footage into separate disks.

Wait! they have HD's serious? Will the cheap $200 ones have a HD?

Just to be clear, I mean hard drive, not high def.

Anyhow, at Sams Club, there is a Philips DVD Recorder with 120GB HD going for only like $460 (cnd) So at the highest quality, that's over 20 hours. At the lowest quality, over 150 hours.

Yeah I knew what you meant :)

Is there a brand that allows me to add credits and a message at the end of the recording.

Damn I wish my computer was newer. I really would like to add a message at the end and maybe credits.

Do you have a firewire connection on your computer? If so, you can export credit videos to the DVD.

nope. just single layer burning. and as said, there can be a little editing if dvd rw/ram is used but its very very lmited. also since its recording real time the quality is kinda limited too... its acceptable at 1hr per disc.
