So why isn't a diablo 3 out yet.

The 2nd one was extremely popular and I enjoyed it immensely even though it was the first RPG I'd played. Seems since it was so popular they'd have made it a priority to bring a 3rd one out quickly. Is there even a 3rd one in the works?

The people who created Diablo broke off from Blizzard a while ago. They are making a new game in their new studio, Flagship Studios.

They originally were their own company, I believe it was called Condor. When they were bought by Blizzard Entertainment, it was renamed to Blizzard North. Since all those guys left, however, I doubt we'll see another game with that branch of BE. The battle.net guys left too, they are working on Guildwars. The community manager of Guildwars worked at diabloii.net, one of the most popular diablo2 fansites. She's pretty cool.

I believe there was a 3rd new studio made up of old blizzard employees, but I can't remember who it was. All the good employees left blizzard a while ago, I wouldn't expect much out of them in the future. Frankly, I consider WoW a failure on many levels.

why do you think wow blows?

1. Level grind

This is the biggest problem with MMORPG's today. Some have worked outside the box and gotten around it. WoW has not. They tried to fix it by pushing people towards quests for experience, but quests are just as boring. The quest system is no different than any other. Go kill 6 goats, come back and get a dirty glove or a stained helmet.

2. Massive

What's massive about it? Can't you get the same gameplay from Diablo? You login, join a group of 5 others, and go into an instance, which is basically your own little world. Why bother paying a monthly fee for what you can get for free in dozens of other RPG's. Many allow for larger groups even 😛

3. Not prepared

Not being able to login to a game you are paying monthly for is a disgrace to the whole industry. I can tell you right now that if I had been told I couldn't login, I would have canceled my account immediately. I'm surprised they haven't lost more customers to this.

4. Innovation

You switch to new games because they look better, introduce new gameplay, and have a cool story. WoW has none of that. It's graphics are of a quality I can only imagine seeing in kids edutainment games. The gameplay is recycled MMO garbage, nothing new, and not even good stuff stolen like usual blizzard. The story... what story? They used the warcraft theme because they have a solid universe with that theme, but there's no real story in WoW. Your gaming experience isn't going to touch it.

Even Penny Arcade, who drew comics for the game and guides, gave up on it. Fact is, it sucks. There are better games, old and new. It suffers from all the fundamental flaws of an MMO without attempting to overcome them.

You can find solutions to many of these flaws in several games, but there is no perfect MMO yet, and probably never will be. However, WoW is certainly on the list of worst ones to survive beta.

Those points about why WoW sucks seem pretty sorry/untrue.

1) Some quests aren't that interesting, others are. It's still more than just staying in one area killing stuff over and over, although some players actually seem to like to do that for whatever reason (usually because they think it is "faster", might be true at times). I was always working on quests lvl1-60 and beyond. I liked some of my rogue quests that dealt with pickpocketing, sneaking around, unlocking a chest, etc.

2) Um, everyone is in the same big world while in D2 everyone was split off into individual worlds of 8 players tops. It's not less "massive" than other MMOs. There's a big world you can encounter people in, meet new ones and see old friends (and enemies), etc.

3) The problem you've described is pretty rare and mostly affected overpopulated servers. But it's true that there have been some server issues.

4) Blizzard doesn't go out and invent brand new genres of games. They take existing game ideas and make them better, polish the various aspects. MMO gameplay is still new to many people who got WoW, and it's a next gen mmo. The fact that it doesn't seem new to you didn't stop plenty of people who've played other MMOs from joining in.

Blizzard's sales pretty much prove how well their method works.

Penny Arcade: Are you claiming they ever stuck to one game and only wrote comics about that? Nobody but WoW players would visit their site in time if all they did was make comics about WoW.

WoW isn't perfect, but it's one of the best if not THE best MMO out there. If you absolutely hate it chances are MMOs in general just aren't going to be something you like.

Blizzard's sales show how many fanboys are out there. The total subscription is still below EQ1 and about equal to EQ2, and there are other more popular MMO's than that. So even the fanboys couldn't push it into #1, and never will. FFXI is probably the most popular MMO of all time, but they've probably got even more fanboys 😛

I have been doing MMO's for 10 years, this isn't even close to the best, and if you think it is then chances are you haven't played others much.

The real answer to #2 is: Malak is wrong.

Malak should also note that gamespy said it best. "WoW: Despite being cartoony, WoW's graphics are beautiful." - http://pc.gamespy.com/articles/572/572447p6.html

Oh and the level grind in WoW is the smallest its ever been in an mmorpg. Despite that, no one is forced to grind. You can get from 1-60 simply by taking your time and doing quests. Read every review across the entire internet, this point is solid fact. Refuting it shows you don't really know the game at all.

The server wait is a simple fault of letting people choose their own servers and not supplying enough pvp servers at launch time. I believe people should be able to choose their own server. But when every pvp guild chooses Archimonde as its home and floods the server, you've got a problem. Regardless, every _popular_ mmorpg to date has had launch issues.

Your gaming experience doesnt' touch any story? Would you like to explain the story behind Ulduar? How about the story behind Sargeras? Oh wait those arn't stories? Ok, what happened to fordring's son? Who do the Scarlet Crusaders work for and why? Why are the undead fighting the undead and who rules Undercity and why?

Edit: Oh and to the author. Guild Wars will be the next Diablo. The real difference between Diablo and GW is that the game is now fully 3D requiring more than just point and click and that battle.net chatrooms are now 3d towns.

Diablo 1 & 2 ruined so many lives, including mine. I think they saw that. Maybe they'll have it in their hearts to never create such a game again. 🙂

Who will wager that Diablo2 is more popular online than WoW is by the time WoW reaches the age Diablo2 is now?

Ha ha ha. He said "quickly" in reference to Blizzard. Ha ha ha.

Nobody, because $$ vs Free. (Let me clarify, nobody would wager against diablo2 being more popular)

I wanted to like Diablo 2 but it was designed first as a multiplayer game and I don't care much for hack'n'slash multiplays. The save system for solo play blew with corpse retrieval ala EQ with the mobs that killed u still surrounding your body. IIRC, you could lose all your money very easily if you couldn't retrieve your corpse. And, the save points were also piss IMO.

Starcraft: Ghost will flop, and Blizzard will be dissolved/absorbed by Vivendi. We will never see another Starcraft or Diablo game.

Indeed 🙂

For longevity, replayability.... Diablo2 makes WoW look like a fashion. In one day and out the next.

Granted, not many people would pay for diablo2 whereas its obvious loads of people want to pay to play WoW.

Diablo3 would be impossible to make really. There is not much you can do to Diablo2 that would improve it. Hackers, graphics, better interfaces, a half decent plot.... not much you can do to it before you change what Diablo2 is and people dont like repeated games but also dont like change.

Cant please the public unless you're game is decent, near bug-free and you get lucky these days really.

the only thing lacking in wow imo is the pvp. there needs to be some reward for killing someone (lewt, money, or a rank system). As it stands now, there is nothing to make a level 60 even thikn twice about killing a level 15. As for malak's arguments:
1) this is fastest leveling ive seen (except for SB test server), and the quests are not only as u described. play the game.
2) you do not spend your entire life in an instance. try playing on a pvp server clown
3) what mmorpg doesnt get its servers hammered the first week or so of play?
4) The graphics in wow are very good. Not HL2 good, since that would make everyones system slow as hell, ut very good none the less. On top of that, the artistic direction in the game is great too, each zone has its own colors/themes/music etc, so everything looks warcraft-ish.

my suggestion to you is to play the game for more then 10 minutes.

kthx

What about a Diablo based MMORPG? I imagine they would just take the source code for WoW and change the 3D models to something Hell based. Now you can charge people $15 /month X 2!
