Unless they were to secretly set up their own subscription news service

Copyright holders can go after uploads with DMCA complaints, but I'm not aware of RIAA/MPAA going beyond that and attempting to sue individual usenet uploaders. And whatever DMCA complaints they are making don't appear to be doing much to stop the flood of material. From what I've seen, the people who're most effective at shutting down posts of their material tend to be small-time pornsite operators who have a lot of free time to monitor usenet

There is a way they can know you just don't hear about it.

actually, compared to BT and other P2P protocols, usenet is barely making a dent against the industry. only old school or tech savvy users are aware of it. whenever i try to tell my friends about it, they always say its too complicated :)confused:), and they rather BT or request it through me.

i personally don't see how hard it is, but having used it for over 13 years, it's 2nd nature to me.

If your friend still can't figure it out with newsleecher or sabnzbd doing all the work for them basically they don't deserve to use usenet then. Most of my friends do not understand it either and I don't think a single one uses it. Mainly because its to difficult and it cost money. 13 years is a long time but usenet started way back.

The RIAA suing people is really just a scare campaign. It doesn't matter who they sue as long as it gets media coverage.

The RIAA is more more crazy than the MPAA too.

I'm sure some top boss guy at the RIAA asked his minions about newsgroups. He probably said something like "Hey Tardboy, go and find out the effect news groups having on music pirating.".

Tardboy "Ok Boss".

...later that day....

Tardboy "Hey Boss, there isn't a way for me to know what was downloaded by end users so I don't know what impact they have. Could by low, could be high..."

Boss "Thx Tardboy, we can't put a $$$ to it so we won't presue it, plan aborted"
