I mean as bad as it beats the GTX in some of the direct3d games its get crushed even more in the opengl games...i think it is the only reason some sites have been hesitant to claim ultimate champion...

So why do they do so poor?? Are they purposely turning there back on opengl??? If so why would they with some of the biggest game titles using opengl....

I would maybe think bad drivers except for the fact it looks like that even last generation cards have been porr in this area....

Good debate here please...

I use opengl apps and so it would be a must for me.

OpenGL driver needs a complete rewrite and they're being lazy. Frankly I think the hardware is in every way superior. Driver maturity will come with time, and then I'll check on R520 again...

Personally I think it's because nvidia has the superior driver team. Their opengl drivers are better, their linux drivers are better, their multi-monitor support is better...ATi has focused all its efforts on dx9 gaming and they don't seem to really care about anything else...

i'll agree with you on all except the multi-monitor stuff, i found the ATI solution (with CCC and Hydravision) a lot easier and more elegant a solution than the nvidia solution i'm using now...

You last line is maybe a little harsh tho...;)

Do all these talks about poor opengl come from doom 3? Cuz there's an ati tweak for that. I went from about 34 frames to a steady 59-60 frames. The tweak can be found somewhere on overclockersclub.

The OpenGL ICD needs a complete overhaul. As for what is specifically wrong with it, you'd need to ask an ATi driver engineer.

Are you sure ATI has poor OpenGL drivers? Maybe Nvidia has poor DirectX drivers. Maybe the hardware is just so different that one processes DirectX better and the other processes OpenGL better.

It does seem that ATI focuses on 3dmark more than anything else, so maybe they are slacking in their opengl driver department..

I suppose it's their drivers. It's probably not their lack of dual z-/stencil ops per ROP, as RV530/X1600XT has that, and it still can't smoke a 6600GT or 6800 with its higher core clock. Following this graph--which I may well be misinterpreting, as I don't fully understand it--I would have thought a lack of texture units was hurting the X1600XT, but it's got 1/3 less than the X800 in AT's tests, and it scores just about even with it.

So, I guess it's drivers? Or maybe iD (still) coding to nV's strengths?

I'd like to see some Serious Sam 2 D3D vs. OGL numbers.
