So why do we need/want massive res for gaming? I played on a small LCD HDTV (66cm iirc) at the weekend & i was blown...

The desktop looks razor sharp & Farcry/UT2004 looked mindblowing on this thing (2xAA/4xAA & 8xAF respectively). So why do we all lust over relatively small high res screens for gaming?

When screens start getting that big you need to sit back to use them comfortably, so a higher res would be wasted anywho...

I'm smitten & a small (either 66cm or 81cm) LCD HDTV will be my primary monitor in about six months i think ;)

Basically, for me it's a problem of screen size. Just as with TV's, you always want the bigger screen, I too want bigger screens for PC gaming.
Unfortunately, PC monitors bigger then 19" have higher native resolutions, which means playing on lower then native settings produces slightly lackluster image quality. Not to mention the fact that 1280 x 800 is not even near as sharp or detailed as higher resolutions.

You play those same games on a Samsung 244T or a Dell 2405FPW at native resolutions, or 1680 x 1050 and then tell me you think as highly of your first smaller LCD experience.
It's not a mind boggling difference, but there is enough of one to merit videophilles like me go out and waste money on bigger screens, and overly priced GPU's :p

i dunno,... my lcd widescreen's native res is 1440x900 and its fabulous,... ive also ran quake4 at 1280x720p HD ,that was pretty damn sweet also,...much better than my old crt at 1600x1200 easily. and looks way better than my direct view sony wega HDTV 34" .quake4,doom3,farcry,fear all look so incredible in a true widescreen res that even a smaller sized widescreen for yoru pc would stale out a crt in a heartbeat imo

We measure TV screens in cm, not inches here in Australia (yet we measure monitors in inches...) It works out to 25.98 inches

That rez is great for games but will make internet surfing sucktastic.

Get ready to scroll side ways to view a webpage all the time.

Thats why I went from a 1366x768 32" LCD HDTV to a 1920x1080 37" LCD HDTV.

I don't think I could take a step backwards (in resolution) from my 2005FPW to a ~720p display. I have done the HDTV thing before at LAN parties, and it was a nice experience (you've seen the pics ;)), but in reality, to buy something that I'd really want to use as a primary monitor, I'd have to go for 1080p (if I were to use a 16:9 HDTV), and that's going to be several times more expensive than my monitor. I can definitely stick with what I've got now, and I can even tell the difference between 720p HDTV and 1080i HDTV on my current monitor. ;)
