I realize maybe no one will reply to this (its somewhat of a Hardware question), as everyone who bought a recent rig pretty much went Core 2, but just wondering for those who are using AMD's "gaming" platform. How is it, would you do it again?

Well, I've been running my E6600 since Feb 2007, and just ordered an E8500 after Intel's price cuts this month. I've been thinking of throwing together a cheaper Phenom X4/780G system, but it'd be running Linux and crunching Seti.

As much as I like AMD, Core2 is superior ATM. Running an OC'd E2140 since I upgraded my system last fall. Still, in most games you are GPU limited rather than CPU limited, so it makes sense to buy the best videocard you can for the money.

I'm finally going to buy an AMD HD4850... too good of a value to pass up. $140AR for 300% of my current video performance = win.

The Phenom fairs much better in server environments than gaming environments. Its a cheap CPU as well, with the entire line being priced below 240 USD. But, its cheap for a reason.

The Phenom is the weak point of AMD's product line right now, with strong GPUs in the Radeon 4000 series and strong motherboard chipsets in the 780 and 790 designs. The description of boat anchor against the Phenoms is not inaccurate. Hopefully the 45nm versions will bring some improvements.

I like how AMD gets people using the term 'spider platform' when it doesn't really mean anything...seriously though, it makes it sound like it offers something more than the sum of the parts alone even though it doesn't...

I am running the rig in sig (an X2 instead of a Phenom but close enough), plays everything I want it to 1920x1200, keeps me happy.

My phenom 9500/msi 8800gt can sometimes get to sub 30 fps in day of defeat source at 1440x900...I shudder at the prospect of ever using it to game at 1920x1200 o__O

if intel had a graphics division, they'd be doing the same thing.

skulltrail is just a chipset...isnt it? (looks confused here...doesnt know)

anyways, intel doesnt have a performance graphics division. therefore, they dont do the same thing as AMD in putting together the sum of in-house parts and labelling them as something more.

I've talked to several people at local computer shops in my area over the last few months. None of them have ever built a phenom system. Not only are they not trying to sell them but they have never been asked to build one, ever.

$ for $ AMD's quad cores fail when it comes to gaming. I waited many months waiting for the Phenoms and "Spyder" hoping to stay with the underdog. If it comes down to 5-10% performance difference AMD would get my business. You have to really stretch to make sense of AMD processors at this point even playing the underdog card. Most, if not all, Intel processors will do 20% overclocks at the bare minimum, many in the 50%+ area, and they are faster clock for clock. The ease of this for anyone who can use Google also makes it a no brainer.

I want the AMD X2 days back. If they can hold out on the finance side they will get competitive again. When people want a good internet/email machine I still build them low end AM2 X2 EE systems where I see AMD still kicks some ass.
