Fanboy crap aside, if you look at the recent history of the video card releases, both ATI and nVidia have been pretty much neck and neck. One nudges in front of the other here and there but it's mostly been an even race (performance and feature wise).
I'm of the opinion that if the X1800 doesn't offer noticeable feature enhancements over the 7800gtx, I'll skip this generation of video cards. The only thing so far that might tip the balance in favor of getting a new video card is the AVIVO features. Quite frankly while the fanboys were ranting and raving about the performance of a 7800gtx and 7800gtx in sli mode, I was yawning through the whole thing. Am I wrong in wanting something more from a card that the video card manufactorers are charging $400-600 for? Am I wrong in thinking the performance increases, while decent, didn't make it worthy of upgrading from a single 6800 or x800 card if you already had one of those?
And it's not really the money, but rather the bang for the buck I'm after. I can afford a gee whiz bang computer with 4GB of RAM, 2x 7800GTX's, X2 4400's, etc. However, the bang for the buck would be complete crap. It's one of the reasons that while I have a SLI capable mobo, I will never use SLI mode. ATI, nVidia, make me want to buy your video cards. Don't give me marketing BS.
I have an X800 and the AVIVO features being what I'm really looking at, with the overall gaming benchmarks as a secondary factor in the X1800 cards, I'll have to say that if I had a 7800, I wouldn't get the X1800 unless the AVIVO features were very very compelling for what I do.
All will be answered in less than 24 hours. Probably benchmarks will be released at the stroke of midnight EST.
PS: Am I the only one that think the current insane video card prices were partially the fault of bad yield of the high end video cards? ATI and nVidia having noticed the prices some people were willing to pay for video cards are pricing them higher and higher. Three or so years ago the newest top end video cards costed maybe $300-400 upon release, now they cost $600.
