So who was the genius that made this decision?

Something just dawned on me today. A little history first...

Lately I've noticed that I have a bitch of a time at the ATM machine entering the right numbers. I also can't dial a phone number correctly the first time if my life depended on it. I though I was just a dumbass. (yes, I know I still am but...)

Today I had my phone sitting next to my keyboard and I realized that the friggen numbers on the keyboard start off with the 1 in the lower left corner, while on the phone they start off in the upper left corner.

So who's the genius that made that decision?

Now it makes total sense. I've been doing a ton of data entry at work these last couple months, most of which are numbers. Naturally I've gotten to the point where I don't have to look at the keypad anymore. However, in the process I've screwed myself for non-keyboard number pads.

Everything from ATM's, to alarm panels, to phones all have the 1 in the upper left corner.

Sorry

It seemed to make sense when I started doing that.

Start doing your 10 key work with the opposite that you do ATMs and stuff with, your brain will work out the difference eventually. Same thing happened to my wife, when she got proficient at 10 key.

She does 10 key right handed, dials the phone and ATMs left handed.

lol, I never knew they were different, now I am going to be really screwed up.. thanks 🙂

I'm proficient with both, although I "type" faster with the keyboard number pad.

I have the habit of using both hands when I use ATM and phone, though.

yeah i noticed this a while ago - very annoying

from a job many years ago doing data entry i can bang out numbers on the numberpad very quickly - every so often i'll be dialing a phone or entering ATM pin & my brain will just freeze cuz the numbers are reversed

Ok, just talked with JonnyDuke, who has a friend that found a website 😎 (how's that for convoluted) that said:

When the original push button phones came out the systems required a slower dial time...accountants and people who were used to 10key were punching in numbers too fast for the system. So the companies reversed the keypads.

😎 Sorry, no link yet, I'm looking.

Ok, after a little research I've found some support for the theory I already stated, and some for this theory. Not sure which is true, both sound pretty plausible.

Interesting web site PrinceofWands.

I'll go with it. 🙂

So now the problem is, how do we get the phone companies to change it? 😀
