Setting up DPAD by DanC.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=1209514&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=

Here's the short version of how to get started.

1. Create a directory called "Muon"
2. Download this zip file to your muon directory http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/v433.zip
3. Unzip the above file
4. Copy this text, and paste into a file named "results.dat" and "sampleresults.dat" http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/sample500.txt
5. Open notepad, enter "[TA]Username" - where "Username" is YOU!
6. Save above file as "user.txt"
7. Invoke "muon1.exe" (graphical version) or "muon1_background" (background mode) or "muon1_cmdline" (DOS window)

That's it. You're running. The client will create a file called "results.txt" - this is what will be sent to the server upon upload of results. You may choose to wait until it gets to 100Kb in size - then it will dump (using FTP) on its own, or you can use manual upload. In any event - you'll need to have at least 10kb in results.txt in order to dump.

The only other thing is making an adjustment to "config.txt" if you have multiple processors.

Pretty easy!

For those running Linux, DPAD does run under wine! I am using RedHat 9 and am having success running the command line version of DPAD. After making sure wine is installed correctly, open a terminal and use the `wmcd` command. This puts you in a Windows command line (a DOS box) mode. Navigate to your DPAD folder (using dir not ls 😉) and issue the `muon1` command. There ya go! Should be crunching muons after typing in your username. Remember, do this as a user, NOT root! I have no idea as to the security implications of DPAD, let alone wine. The machine I am using has a crappy 1meg vid card, no DPAD graphics for me. 🙁

Another cool thing is that MuonMonitor works under wine! Unzip muonmonitor to your DPAD directory and in your terminal, issue the command `wine MuonMonitor.exe`.

OK. I just gave the DPAD client a try and it worked all smooth. Nice thing and definitly worth a try.

Then I read Smoke's new post "Defend the House"

Now I have a problem ... Stick to what I posted above or be loyal to the TeAm and help where it's needed the most. But I guess either way it's good for the TeAm, so entering DPAD a bit later (2 months or so) for finishing SETI won't be that bad for DPAD as after SETI I can focus all machines on it.

Just wanted to let u know that I usually stand to what I write DanC, amdxborg and d347h! This time it's just gonna be a bit delayed. 🙂

The config.txt file has the following line:

Sample file URL: http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/sample100.txt

Do I need to change it to sample500.txt ?

Threads: 1 <- Thi is for the number of pprocessors?

I (or the program) only upload the results.txt file? I do not have to download anything?

Sorry for these questions but I am only used with RC5 and SoB

Danc i understand what you are saying, but if a week or so some of those SETI machines come to DPAD, we will climb also... just a week later 😉

Note reason to get mad if someone decides to switch a couple machines to SETI during this days...

1- No, no need to change that line.
2- Yes.
3- Only uploads results.txt

No need to change the link, I have had no trouble using the default. There may be reasons to change it, others may have varying opinions.
The program will automatically upload the results.txt when it reaches 100k, or if it is at least 10k, you can upload it manually using the manualsend.bat file.
As for Threads, I really dunno, I also assume it has to do with multiple processors or a cpu with hyper-threading.

dasm, stormgiant is quick! 😉

BMC as a member of both the seti and the dpad teams I understand where you're coming from and have much the same problems, so much help needed in so many places

BMC, I'm also running SETI and DPAD and both of them need a boost!!! My fleet is divided between SETI and DPAD...
So hope we'll see you soon in DPAD!!! and hope TA SETI makes it!!!

Man, I love this TeAm!!!

Yeah, I'm just finishing enough DPAD WUs to be able to upload, so I show up on the [TA] team site. Then I gonna switch all machines to SETI. Guess I'm even going to stop my current ClimatePrediction.Net model though it's in phase 3 and has been running for 30 days now.

But hey, who can resist a final call to arms??

Thx for the links man! I just uploaded some (I guess 10) results and gonna switch to SETI now. But my return to DPAD after SETI is a definite thing!

I can add a P3 800 now and again.
It's got a network card added but it's not connected to a network if you know what I mean. It's in my sons room.
If it works by sneakernet, I have an MP3 player I can transfer files with, 250 mb storage.
Would that do ??

Stormgiant sneakernets from work to home but I'm not sure how he does it. I think you just have to copy the results.txt file from the netless machine to a machine with a internet connection.

It looks like it should be quite simple, copy one muon folder to another, I'll give it a try 🙂
I had some muon results returned on my own, I've added the [TA] call sign to my username so we'll see what happens 😀

That is correct. Just copy ( make always a backup ) the results.txt file over to the internet computer ( don't overwrite the work beeing made in there ).
After uploaded, wait a while to see if it is contabilized in the stats. That's it.

important note : not the entire folder, just the results.txt file.

Just the results.txt, thats handy 😀

DanC, I've been in touch with Stephen Brooks about helping with the DPAD code. I'm pretty sure that while all these universities/research facilities are helping with the design of the accelerator, he is the only one running the DPAD project.

From my discussions with him, the client has a LOT of room for optimization. He told me he's given me an idea of what's currently restricting the client's throughput and I've exchanged a few ideas with him on improving the code. He's told me he might give me access to some of the code sometime next week, and I hope to be able to increase performance noticeably over the next couple of weeks after that. When all is said and done, I'll be submitting my optimizations to him and he will decide whether or not to put them into the actual clients. I'm pretty excited about helping out 🙂 look for my P4@3.3 GHz to pop up soon 🙂.

Not trying to sound like I'm taking the piss here because I'm not, but GO for it 😀
😎

Great information, and a great discussion guys! Glad nobody got all heated up over it. 🙂

It will be cool if you can help out on the client - I'm sure Stephen would appreciate that.
You could also put a throttle on the next version if the user.txt didn't read "[TA]" something eh? 😉

DanC, I think cause a lot of us DPAD guys is helping out at SETI, we're gonna be getting a lot of new members when the SETI race is over...and then we'll be UNSTOPPABLE. The TeAm will become a DPAD giant!!!

Or make the client to auto-overwrite user.txt file with [TA]D347h info 😉 j/k

Yeah, when SETI ends we sure will get BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG kick when SETI-wicked ones switch machines to DPAD... All project will get smaller or bigger kick...
